NOTRE DAME DE LA GARDE


Byzantine style domes, multicolored stones, gold, and mosaic
2 parts:
A vaulted low church with a crypt
A high church which is the sanctuary devoted to the Virgin Mary

There is a large statue of the Virgin Mary on the bell tower.


This was made by Lequesne in bronze with a gold leaf in the Christo de
Studios in Paris and put there in 1870.

CATHEDRAL DE LA MAJOR
Constructed between 1852-1896
This is the oldest church in the entire city
In French, this is referred to as the Cathedrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille
Designated by the Roman Catholic Church in 1896 as the basilica minor
The exterior of Byzantine and Romanesque architecture
Proportions are comparable to those of St. Peters Basilica in Rome
Nearly 470 feet long
Front towers are nearly 200 feet long
Central dome is 231 feet tall

TOURIST TIPS
Best to explore on foot
Has a metro, a bus network, shuttles, and taxis
The metro offers a Carte 10 Voyages Card which buys you 10 rides with one ticket.
Taxis can be pre-booked with a deposit of 15 EUR.
Taxis cost about 40-50 EUR.
There is a shuttle available from the airport to Marseille Saint- Charles rail station
every 20 minutes at a cost of 8.50 EUR.

Climate is pleasant all year but summers, April - October, get very hot
