IIM Ranchi organized a
two-week long induction
pragramme for the students of PGDM and
PGDHRM 2015-17 batch.
The learning commenced
right from day 1, yet it
was ensured that the
students were not dismayed but amused. It
began on 13th June Dean
Prof. (Dr.) P. K. Bala addressing the entire batch
with a welcome speech
focusing on the mission
and vision of IIM Ranchi.
This was followed by the
address of the Director,
Prof. Anindya Sen who
motivated the students to
work brilliantly while
maintaining a personal
philosophy of life. The
entire programme was
meticulously
designed
by Prof. Gaurav Marathe.
The activities to follow
required the 190 students
to be divided into 8
batches, to engage them
into interactions, group
learnings and performances. The first activity
for the groups was to
prepare a 7 minutes short
film on Management in
our lives within 24hrs!
This, and several such
assignments aimed at

encouraging team work

and co-ordination among
students while making
them aware of deadlines
are sacrosanct mantra at
IIM Ranchi.
Prof.
Amita
Dutta
from Rabindra
Bharati
University delivered
a
lecture on Dance forms of
India portraying its heritage, values and culture in
a novel way, whileProf.
Swapan Kumar Mullick
(Director, The Statesman
Print and Journalism
School) gave the students
an informative and enlightening lecture on film
making. Prof.
Deepak
Dhamija
and Prof.
Ghanshyam
Lalsa also
guided them through the
art of drama making. An
outbound program was
arranged in collaboration
with the RMG Learning
Centre, wherein the students got some time out
to visit rock gardens, the
Firayalal Shopping mall,
take snaps in front of
Captain Dhonis house,
among many other things
in Ranchi. RMG group
kept the students engaged with fun activities
such as solving murder
mystery and war strategy.

The new batch also attended area presentations on Accounting and

Finance,
Operations,
Marketing,
Economics
and
Strategy
building and HRM and Organi
zational Behaviour by the
respective faculty members. They also were a
part of International Yoga Day, observed across
the country. The most
interesting part was the
sports events arranged by
seniors. Tug of War,
Dodgeball, Bricks, Pipes
and Marbles, to name a
few. These games were
not just fun, but were
also associated with important lessons in management.
The programme culminated with the Talent
show where the students
showcased a wide variety
of phenomenal talents.
These two weeks gave the
students a complete hang
of how busy, occupied yet
enjoyable the coming two
years are going to be,
leaving them totally prepared to ride the daunting B-school roller coaster as the classes begin .

IIMR Memoirs The MBA Saga

While the internship stories
were filled with adventurous
tales of survival in the corporate jungle and overflowed
with wit and humour, the induction program stories recounted the heady romance
brewing between the students
and their new found college
life.
Entries spoke of the
transformative experience the
students faced throughout
their B-School journey.

The best part about memories

lies in making them. It is
equally enjoyable to relive
them. And of course the best
way to do that is to write
about them.
Keeping this thought in mind,
The Literary Club of IIM Ranchi organized IIMR Memoirs The MBA Saga inviting
both the senior and the junior
batches of IIM Ranchi to pen
down their memories about
their summer internship program and the induction pro-

gram respectively. Memories

both good and bad were welcomed with an open mind.
The students were encouraged
to write about their achievements as well as the challenges they faced and overcame.
The contest which lasted for
more than 10 days was one of
the first intra college competitions introduced to the junior
batch and it received enthusiastic participation from the
entire student community.

The first prize worth Rs 1000,

was awarded to Amaresh
Krishna Nagineni for his skilful narration of his internship
experience with a leading public sector bank in Hyderabad.
The second prize worth Rs.
500 was won by Namita Kapaley and her reminiscence of
her internship journey with an
FMCG company in a foreign
land far away from home. The
third prize was awarded to
Sheniga K for her lively account of the fortnight long
Induction Programme. The
Literary Club will continue to
appreciate the literary talent
of IIM Ranchi through more
such exciting competitions.

Some take us
forward, they're

IIMR MemoirsSummer Internship at ICICI Bank

Internship? What does it
mean?, his words brought me
back to reality, shattering my
reverie. I was expecting a
question more like, Which
Institute are you from?when
I said that I am doing my
Internship (For which I can
boast that Im from an IIM, of
course). I t was the manager
who sat right beside me and
rose ranks through experience. This was just a trailer to
my internship and there were
signs for more (signs as clear
as Winter is coming!)

Let me tell you something

about the City of Nizams. If
you feel that Hyderabad is
special only for its Dum Biriyani and Prasads IMAX, then
you can be wrong. Hyderabad
Auto-rickshaws are as popular
as a Delhi metro or a Kolkata
Tram. Well, Ill explain it to
you with an example. If youre
new to Hyderabad and ask an
auto-driver Do you know the
way to Gachibowli? (for hiring), then he (most probably)
may ask you in return Do
YOU know the way to
Gachibowli?. Your purse will
definitely feel a lot lighter
when you get down
at
Gachibowli. Well, I used to
commute in those Autorickshaws every day.
If you throw a keyboard (I
always felt stone is too ancient) in Hyderabad, the probability of hitting a person
working for an IT firm is more
than that of Eden Hazard converting a penalty or even
Greece default. I was one
among the smaller communities, working for a bank & not
an IT firm. The difference was
apparent on Fridays when
others used to wear colorful
and flashy outfits to office and
I was the odd-one out wearing
formals (I had a six-day
week!)

Ah! The formals!! Imagine a

guy wrapped up in a blanket
and thrown into an oven.
Youve this mandatory thing
for all banks and the word
mandatory reflects in the
reaction f gatekeeper of my
office, whenever someone
tries to enter without a Tie.
It was the first day of my Internship and Ive lost my way
in the office building. Yes,
youve read it right. Ive lost
my way in the office building
and not in the way to office
building. Well the reason is
this, the office building which
I worked in, is the largest office building in India and 18th
largest in the world in terms of
floor area with three similar
looking towers. No wonder I
had a hard time finding my
way back to my department
during initial days after having a lunch break. With my
logistics problem within the
building sorted out after few
days, the most important
thing awaited me - Internship
project. Let me tell you about
my project.
(Disclaimer: Some Technical
jargons are used)
Everything is online these
days. So is banking. No, not
that Internet banking. This is
about financial products like
loans & credit cards being sold
online now. Gone are the days
when every customer comes to
a branch and apply for a loan
or credit card. Digitization is
the need of the day for banking. Starting from counting
the number of application
fields in an online loan application form &contacting technology providers, to performing a sentiment analysis &
drafting an online customer
acquisition strategy, my project had it all. Thanks to continuous guidance (not necessarily in a smooth way every

time) by the mentors. Also,

working till 8-9 PM in the
night is never a problem when
youre used to work till 2-3
AM in the morning (thanks to
IIM culture!!).
I found three most important
things which add value during
an Internship both on professional and personal fronts.
First is the assigned project
which you work on. Unless
and until you take it seriously,
no one else around takes you
seriously. Second are the interactions which youve with
your mentors and senior management. After all theyre the
ones who are implementing all
those financial models and
marketing strategies in real
world which we read only
from textbooks or jargonize in
PPTs. Third and the most fun
part are discussions with fellow interns. Obviously the
topics are Normal distribution at breakfast, BCG matrix during lunch and
Scenario analysis while dinner. In the end (or lets say
long-term), thats what we
are!
No matter how much you crib
about your first internship
experience, youll relive the
experience each and every
time you think about it (or talk
about it). Its those memories
which stay with you forever.
How many Simple days and
Struggling days do you remember when you look back
on your life? Ill leave you at
that.

Indian Institute of Management

Ranchi
Suchana Bhawan,
5th Floor, Audrey House
Campus,
Meurs Road, Ranchi 834 008

The ninth Indian Institute of Management was established at Ranchi in 2010. This was made possible
with the extensive support of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and the Government of Jharkhand, working under the guidance of Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
We started at a time when competition and aggression was prevalent in management education. Understanding the need to incorporate right values in young minds, IIMR was started to incorporate right values in
young minds and impart education for the information age that encourages networking and collaborative
advantage.
IIM Ranchi currently offers a two year PGDM in General management and another two year fulltime
programme on Human Resources Management (PGDHRM), Fellow Program in Management and 18
month part time Diploma in Management (PGEXP). We have also launched a certified Barefoot Manger
program to promote entrepreneurship and to impart livelihood skills among the school drop outs and illiterates.
Our Programs are different and we are an institute with a difference.

It is never too late to

been
George Eliot
As IIM Ranchi invites another batch of talented
youngsters into its fold,
there might not be a better time for the newcomers to reminisce about
their past and mull over
their futures. Being within
the hallowed walls of an
IIM will widen your horizons to endless, infinite
possibilities.

You might have come to

the institution as imperfect versions of yourselves. Not one of you

would be without tales of

failures or other missed
opportunities. Through
conscious choices, personal commitment and hard
work, you have finally
joined IIM Ranchi. This is
the time where you redefine yourself into a new
you, a future manager.
And, this is the place
where you rediscover
yourself and become the
person you always dreamt
of being. Forget all your
past failures. Have faith in
yourself and enjoy every
minute of your life at an
IIM. You will not find a
better time or place to become the very best version of yourself. As
George Eliot quite suc-

cinctly puts it, it is never

too late to be who you
might have been.

The Literary Club would

like to take this opportunity to welcome each and
every one of you to IIM
Ranchi. We hope that you
can get the very best out
of yourself during your
