Simultaneous Equations

For question 1 & 2 I have shown all the information needed to understand how to work them out
so you don't need to write all that I have written but the parts that have the [1] beside them show
which working out you are given marks for (and would not get the marks if you hadn't written it)

1a)

2x + 3y = 1
2x + y = 5 (subtract) [1]
2x -2x + 3y -y = 1-5
2y = -4 (2)

y = -2 [1]
To find x:
2x +-2 = 5 (- -2) 2x = 7 (2)
x = 35 [1]

-=+2

check by putting x = 35 y = -2
into both equations to make sure
2x + 3y = 1
(2 x 35) + ( 3 x -2) = 1
7 + -6 = 1 (+ - = -6)
2x + y = 5
(2 x 35) +-2 = 5
7

-2

=5

answer x = 35

b)

3x + y = 26
2)
2x -y = 9 (add) [1]

3x + 2x + y -y = 26 + 9
5 x = 35 (5)
x = 7 [1]
To find y:
3x + y = 26
21 + y = 26 ( - 21)
y = 5 [1]
Check: 3x + y = 26
21 + 5 = 26

To find y:
5x + y = 23
175 + y = 23 (-175)
y = 55 [1]
Check: 5x + y = 23
175 + 55 = 23

-y=9
14 - 5 + 9
2x

answer x = 7

5x + y = 23 (x 2) [1]
4x -2y = 3
10x + 2y = 46 (add) [1]
(10x + 4x) + (2y-2y) = 3 + 46
14 x = 49 (7)
2 x = 7 (2)
x = 35 [1]

4x

y=5

y = -2

14

-2y = 3
- 11 = 3

answer x = 35

y = 55

From now onwards I haven't written how to check, but you should still be doing it with both equations

3) a)

3f + 2c = 425
b) This uses the same
4)
6x + 3y = 12
f + c = 160 (x2) [1]
equations as 3a)
2x - y = -2 (x 3) [1]
2f + 2c = 320 (subtract) so fish costs 105p
6x - 3y = -6 (add) [1]
chips cost 55p
(3f - 2f ) + (2c -2c) = 425 - 320
(6x+ 6x) + (3y - 3y) = 12 + -6
3 fish = 3 x 105 =315p
f = 105 [1]
3 fish + 1 chips =315 + 55p
12x = 6 (12)
c = 160 - 105
= 370p
x = 05 [1]
c = 55 [1]
answer = 370 [1]
To find y: 1 - y = -2 (1- -2)
answer f = 105
c = 55
or 370p
y=3
(no marks for 37)
answer x = 05 y = 3 [1]

From now onwards I have written the minimum working out you need to show to get the marks
5)
2a + 4c = 13
6) 3x + y = 5
7)
4x - 3y = 11 (x 2)
a + 3c = 8 (x2) [1]
x + 3y = 3 (x 3) [1]
6x + 2y =10 (x 3) [1]
2a + 6c =16 (subtract)
3x + 9y = 9
8x - 6y = 22
2a + 4c = 13
3x + y = 5 (subtract)
18x
+ 6y = 30 (add) [1]
2 c = 3 [1] (2)
8y = 4 [1] (8)
26x = 52 ( 26)
c = 15 [1]
y = 05 [1]
x = 2 [1]
a = 8 - 45 = 35
x = 3 -15
y = (10 - 12) 2
[1]
=15[1]
answer

a = 35

c = 15

answer x = 15

y = 05

y = -1 [1]

answer x = 2

y = -1

8) a)
9)a)i) rearrange each equation
a = (60 + 40) 5 = 20
[1]
to get:
b = (60 - 80) 4 = -5 [1]
F - 2C = 30 (x 5)
c = (60 - 24) = 6 [1]
b)

x + 8y = 60
4x - 4y = 60(x 2) [1]

8x -8y = 120 (add)

9x = 180 ( 9)
x = 20 [1]
y = (60 -20) 8
y = 5 [1]
