The path

I always find it interesting to re-read the accounts of the Hebrews in the wilderness after they left Egypt. They came
to a point where the Bible says that they began to complain and fuss about Moses and Aarons leadership and even
wished to be back in the land of slavery in Egypt. Amazing! For 400 years they had been praying for God to get them out
of that awful place and to take them to the Promised Land. God is in the process of fulfilling His promise to them and
they want to go back. It boggles my mind. As the high schoolers asked me a few weeks ago when we studied this
passage, Why in the world would they want to go back?!
However, dont we often find ourselves paddling the same boat? Sometimes it is because we are too frightened to
continue to go forward. That might have been part of the problem with the Israelites. An advance team had gone out
and returned with the news that the land was outstanding but it was filled with giants. Only two of the twelve (Caleb
& Joshua) reported that they could possess the land. It is easy to become paralyzed with fear and the result is that we
regress.
Sometimes it is because we forget what Egypt was like. They were slaves. They were beaten, punished, and
mistreated on every hand. Sometimes people long for the good ol days only because theyve forgotten what the good ol
days were really like. They pleaded with God to get them out of Egyptian slavery but they had forgotten the misery that
was theirs.
Sometimes it is because we just dont have the fortitude and commitment to go forward. They might not have wanted
to pay the price that was going to be necessary to possess the land. We often want the promised land but we want it the
easy way, as well.
When it comes to being a spouse, minister of the Gospel, good parent, or being a consistent follower of Jesus Christ,
there is no easy way. Dont become a victim of a wasted opportunity. Possess the land that God has given you!
So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night. And all the children of Israel
complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, If only we had died in the land of Egypt!
Or if only we had died in this wilderness! Why has the LORD brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives
and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt? So they said to one another, Let
us select a leader and return to Egypt. (Numbers 14.1-4 NKJV)
In Christ with love,
Trip
