Factors affecting torque trassmission through a clutch

Co- effeicient friction

Spring pressure
Radius of clutch
Number of surfaces

Centrifugal clutch

Cable operated clutch adjusts at the gearbox end so play in the

clutch can be measured.

If the cable is adjusted up

to much there will be no free
play in the clutch which will affect the spring pressure. This will
cause the clutch to slip causing premature wear as the clutch will be
engaged all the time. To much play in the cable will cause clutch
drag again affecting spring pressure. Symptoms of clutch drag
creeping forward, not being able to change gear/ crunching.

Release bearing only spins when the clutch is depressed. Often

drivers get into the habit of resting foot on the clutch which means
that the bearing will burn up and dry out causing it to make noise.

Not enough play = Clutch slip

To much play = Clutch drag
Play is measured at the clutch pedal cable is adjusted at the
gearbox
Is some cases the cable adjustment has been moved to a ratchet
mechanism on the top of the pedal as the cable stretched the
mechanism will click over to the next tooth.
Hydraulic clutch

Mechanical advantage by increasing leverage this is achieved by

multiplication of hydraulic pressure in the hydraulic clutch.

Internal release bearing operated directly by the hydraulic fluid.

Disadvantage:
1. To change gearbox has to be removed
2. If it leaks can cause clutch contamination
Air in the hydraulic clutch system causes clutch drag because air
can be compressed affecting the spring pressure.
Bearing noise:- foot on clutch= bearing noise coming from the
release bearing.
Foot on clutch no bearing noise foot off = bearing noise = input
shaft bearing n
