readers and writers achieve success.

Weaving Technology into Your Literacy Classroom


Presenters: Derek Sciecinski and Rita Sorrentino

Looking for some ways to spruce up your Literacy Lessons? Come and see how a few digital tools
can motivate students to enhance their language learning and express their knowledge in
multiple ways.
BREAKOUT CHOICE 3:

Hey! We Wrote Our Own Texts!: Engaging in Reading, Writing, and


Learning in Content Areas
Presenters: Molly Sovocol and Dr.Carol Shiffrin

Find out how students can become truly engaged in content area learning through motivating reading
and writing experiences. Presenters share the ways they use mentor texts, modeling, and mini-lessons
to help students explore a science topic and create their own texts in a variety of genres.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Barbara A. Marinak


Dr. Barbara A. Marinak is associate professor and chair of the Education
Department at Mount St. Marys University. Dr. Marinak received a PhD in
Literacy from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her dissertation was
awarded the 2005 J. Estill Alexander Future Leaders in Literacy Dissertation
Award from the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers.
Prior to joining the faculty at Mount St. Marys, Dr. Marinak spent more than two
decades in public education. She held a variety of leadership positions, including
reading supervisor, elementary curriculum supervisor, and acting superintendent.
Dr. Marinak chaired the Response to Intervention (RTI) Commission of the
International Reading Association from 2012-2014. She is the co-editor, along
with Jacquelynn Malloy and Linda Gambrell, of the IRA publication Essential
Readings on Motivation. She is the co-author, along with Linda Gambrell and Susan Mazzoni of Maximizing
Motivation for Literacy Learning: Grades K-6 published by Guilford Press. And, along with Linda Gambrell,
Dr. Marinak is co-author of the forthcoming book No More Reading for Junk: Best Practices for Motivating
Readers by Heinemann.
Dr. Marinaks research interests include reading motivation, intervention practices, and the use of informational
text. Her work can be found in The Journal of Educational Research, The Reading Teacher, Literacy Research
and Instruction, and Young Children.
