other. Lynna Huynh {PS ~ stea€nts know water left in an open container evaporates (goes into the air) but water ina closed container does not. {earning Objective(s): Students can identify how water, a liquid, can change and be a solid or a gas. Materials: YouTube video, worksheet pages, 3 sandwich bags, flipbook Introduction (2 minutes) 3 Remind students about when we learned how water was aliquid. Liquid can change form/states, such as going from a solid to a liquid, which is what we saw previously with the frozen water. ‘Show students the cup of water and how there is less water inside now (note the line to mark the water level). Tell students the lesson objective: Today we're going to talk about how water can g0 between different states of matter. Then, we'll be able to learn the reason why there is less water in the cup than before. Body (Including Model practice) (S-Yminutes) Read the Science flipbook pages for lesson 2 and lesson 3 and discuss with the students. Show students the sandwich bags filled with water, ice, and air (gas). Talk about the 3 states of matter (liquid, solid, and gas) and how it applies to water. - Draw a diagram (liquid > solid. Liquid>gas. Solid > liquid.) for students to see. - Discuss and ask questions about how we can change the states of matter. . How can water, which is a liquid, become a solid? Freeze. (Write this on diagram) + How cana solid become a liquid? Melt/warm it up. + How can liquid become gas/water vapor for water? Boil. ~ Refer back to the water in the cup and how ‘the water line has gone down fro1 the previous lesson. © vs faye 1¥" fviquil 7 _gas/watey vapor Guided Practice Independent (15-20 minutes) With guided instruction, complete Watch the Changes! p.99 in ABC. Activity book with the students. - The students will draw the different states of matter for water and identify how it changes between states. For independent practice, have students complete a writing activity: - Prompt: Since we have learned the different ways water, which is a liquid, can change states, draw and write one way water can change states. Use your resources: you can look at your worksheet that we did together and the diagram, on the board. - Tell students to color code their Watch the Changes! handout to help them write, - Sentence frames to help students: can change into_. (Example: Ice can change into water:) ‘itcan change by __. (Example: It can change by melting.) hare: Tell students to share with a partner what they wrote, Select a few Pair- students to share their responses with the class. Closure G minute) Summarize how water is a liquid. Liquid can become a solid (freeze) or gas 2-3rmh {evaporation/water vapor). Total Time: 30 minutes
