State objective: You will be using what you know about place value and
rounding to add.
Number Talk (5-8 min)
- Introduce number talks: they're discussions we're going to have about
math, but it's all going to be done mentally. No paper, no pencil.
Problem: How much is 86 and 47? (Answer: 133)
- Allow students plenty of time to think about it.
- Thumbs up if you have one solution, pointer fingers out if you have
another, etc
Questions to prompt: What operation am I going to use if I say "and"? Is
there another way to solve it? Explain how _____ solved it in your own words.
- During discussion, have students take out their journals, divide their paper
into four quarters. Write different strategies on their journals.
Ms. Huynh's Game Board (10 min)
- Do it with the class to see if they can find two and three numbers. Discuss
their reasoning.
- Allow students time to make their own game boards. Let them work with a
partner to solve each other's game board and questions. (5 min to create, 5
min to play)

Go over Adding Numbers worksheet with them by doing 1a and 1b. Students
will complete the rest for homework.
What are three numbers that can make 20? You cannot use the number 10.
