Interviewing Nelson Mandela

1. Was it worth being in prison for 27 years for fighting for rights?
Nelson Mandela: I believe that spending all that time in prison was worth it because in
the end it helped make Africa a better place. In the end, Africa was made a better country
with segregation ended.
2. How did you take part in fighting for equality?
Nelson Mandela: In 1942 I joined the ANC, African National Congress, when I helped to
form the ANC youth league. In 1949 the ANC adopted a more racial mass-biased policy,
the Programme of Action.
3.

Did you think there would be consequences for fighting for equal rights?
Nelson Mandela: Yes, I thought I could get into some trouble joining the ANC.
Segregation was a big thing in Africa. Although most of the continents population is
black, apartheids happen a lot and they are everywhere in Central Africa. I did not expect,
however, to be sentences to life in prison. Luckily I got out of prison and served 27 years.

4.

What was your reaction to becoming the president of Africa?

Nelson Mandela: I was very honored to become the President. In 1991 I became the
President of ANC and immersed myself in official talks to end white minority rule. I was
inaugurated on May 10, 1994.
