Let’s turn now to the first part Nelson Mandela: Leader among leaders 1
a. A leader of his people
Nelson Mandela . Was the first black president of South Africa. He spent 27
years in prison for trying to overthrow the pro-apartheid government. After
he left prison he worked to achieve human rights an a better future for
everyone in South Africa.

b. When did he live?
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African activist, lawyer and politician of the
20th and 21st centuries. Nelson Mandela was born in 1918. known mainly for: - Fighting
peacefully against segregation racial in South Africa. He was in prison from 1962 to
1990. He became president of South Africa in 1994 and retired in 1999. He died on
December 5, 2013 at 95 years of age following a lung illness.
Nelson Mandela became famous for his long fight against bad government and
racial prejudice. He became a hero to people all over the world. As South
Africa’s President, he was respected for his courage and wisdom in bringing
people together to live in peace.

a. School and college
Nelson went to a misión school and then to college. He was good at school.
He also enjoyed boxing and running. At fort hard University he studied law.
One of his Friends there was Oliver Tambo. Nelson left the university in 1939,
after student protests about the way is was run

b. Mandela becomes president
The late South African leader Nelson Mandela won the presidency on April 27,
1994, and became the first Afro-descendant president of that country.
Known as "Madiba" by the South Africans, Mandela took office of the
presidency on May 10 of the same year and said "Never. It will never happen
again that this beautiful land experiences again the oppression of one over
the other." .
With the African National Congress (ACN), Mandela won the presidential
elections with 63 percent of the votes, while Frederick De Klerk, of the
National Party, won 20 percent and the Inkatha party 10 percent.
For five years he gave up a third of his salary and created the Nelson Mandela
Children's Fund, which improved the situation of the black middle class but
proved insufficient to end social inequality.

c. Family Life
Mandela was married three time. His first marriage ended in 1957. He an his
second wife, Winnie, divorced in 1996. At the age of 81, he married Grace
Machel. He had six children and twenty grandchildren.
