aka Diabetic Ketoacidosis

(DKA)

Blood glucose levels fall below 70 mg/dl

Feeling weak (appear sleepy)
Feeling hungry
Fatigue
Feeling dizzy
Headache
Blurred vision
Sweating (cold)
Confusion (absent-minded / impaired
speech)
Loss of consciousness
And in extreme cases, coma

Extreme thirst (or hunger)


Uncontrollable need to urinate
Unable to focus
Feeling tired / fatigued
Showing irritation
Blurred vision
Confusion and disorientation
Nausea / Vomiting
Bad breath
Dry mouth / skin
Deep laboured breathing /
hyperventilation
Rapid heartbeat
And in extreme cases, loss of
consciousness and coma

Student should leave the room accompanied by


someone

1 drink water
2 - test for presence of ketones (same meter)

1 take 2 sachets of sugar


2 wait for 10 minutes take blood test
3 if below high 90s / 100 2 more sachets
4 wait for 10 minutes

3 if sugar levels above 300 - take 100 from


total
3 decide insulin quantity to take 12 units
for first time

5 new test

4 ingest no more than 1 portion of carbs


(same for hypo)

6 if levels in the 90s / 100 ingest 1 portion


of carbs (e.g. small packet of crackers)

5 re-test blood glucose 2 hours later

7 if not, repeat previous steps


In case there are no sugar sachets available,
sugary fizzy drinks or fruit juice (250 ml) are
allowed
