1. No entry fee is required, and all rights in the entry remain the property of the author.
2. All entries must be original works, written by the student, in English. Plagiarism, which includes the use of third-
party poetry, song lyrics, characters or another person's work, without written permission will result in
disqualification. Entries may not have been previously published.
3. To be eligible, entries must be essays, or a work of poetry, up to, not to exceed, 250 words in length.
4. The Contest is open only to students currently enrolled in 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th grade.
5. The Contest entries are divided into two categories, Category 1 consists of entries submitted from 4 th and 5th grade
students. Category 2 consists of entries submitted from 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Category 1 entries and
Category 2 entries will be judged separately.
6. Entries must be typewritten or a computer printout in black ink on white paper, double spaced, with numbered
pages. All other formats will be disqualified. Each entry must have a cover page with the title of the work, the
authors name, grade (Category 1 or 2),teacher’s name (for grade verification), address, telephone number, and email
address . Every subsequent page must carry the title and a page number, but the author's name must be deleted to
facilitate fair judging.
7. No Entries will be returned.
8. There shall be three prizes in each grade category: a First Prize of a $100 Savings Bond, in addition, the First
Prize winners will be invited to tour the joint base Fort Lewis/McChord on a date to be determined, a Second Prize
of a $50 Savings Bond, and a Third Prize of a free 1pound cheeseburger with all-you-can-eat fries at Twede’s Café
in North Bend. All winners will also receive a certificate. All winners will be invited to attend as a guest of honor
at the Memorial Day Lunch at the American Legion Post #79. Certificates will be presented to the winners. If a
winner cannot attend the lunch, the certificate will be mailed.
9. Additional Prizes - All entries will be entered into a drawing for a Nintendo Wii Console with Wii Sports. The
First, Second, and Third Prize winners are eligible in this drawing.
10. To be eligible for judging, an entry must be postmarked no later than midnight on May 17th, 2010.
11. Contestants may submit only one entry.
12. All entries are final. No revisions are accepted.
13. Entries will be judged by members of the American Legion Post #79, a staff member from the Snoqualmie
Valley Record and other community members. The decisions of the judges are entirely their own, and are final.
14. Winners will be individually notified of the results.
15. This contest is void where prohibited by law.
