3 TOPIK,

1. (Korean

and alphabet)

1)
The Korean language is the native language of 45 million people in
South Korea and 23 million people in North Korea.
Moreover, overseas Koreans living in different parts of the world also
use Korean.

North America

The total sum of Korean people including overseas Koreans exceeds 77

million in the world. Korean is ranked 13th by number of people using
the language.
Korean is in the Altaic language family and has an agglutinative
characteristic. That is, Korean attaches 'particles' to nouns and special
endings

to

verbs

and

adjectives

to

indicate

various

grammatical

meanings. Likewise, Korean forms words and clauses by adding

grammatical factors to vocabulary that is characteristic of a so called
agglutinative language.

2)
The Korean alphabet is called 'Hangeul.'
Each letter in Hangeul indicates an individual sound or phoneme.
Hangeul is an alphabetic system and was created by King Sejong in
1443

during

the

Joseon

Dynasty.

It

was

originally

called

Hunmingeongeum and means the right sound to teach the common

people. Before that time, Korean had an oral language but not a
native alphabet; instead Chinese characters, which were sometimes
modified according to the structure of Korean sounds, were used.
However, it was not well suited to the structure of Korean and made
writing very inconvenient.
Therefore, King Sejong conducted linguistic research to develop an
alphabet that matches the structure of Korean and is easy to learn and
write. The alphabet was made up of a total of 28 alphabets which
consisted of 11 vowels and 17 consonants.

?
.

.
Since that time, unused letters were removed and new letters were
added; now there are 21 vowels and 19 consonants currently being
used in contemporary Korean, which are detailed in the following
section.

2.

(Korean Consonants and Vowels)

1) 1 (Consonants, vowels and syllables 1)

(1) 1 (Vowels 1)
The shape of the vowels is based on the three principal factors of the
universe: the sky ( ), earth (), and people (). These three shapes
are used alone as well as in combination to form the 21 vowels.
Single vowels :

l (8)

Diphthongs:

(13)

Korean vowels can be used alone or with other consonants to form

syllables. When used alone, the silent consonant is attached
before a vowel as a placeholder to complete the syllable.

for similar sounds that are articulated in the same place are formed by
adding strokes on top of the principal consonants.
Consonants are always used together with a vowel.

(3) 1 (Syllables 1)
Unlike English, where letters are written sequentially to form words
Hangul letters are grouped into blocks, such as han, to form
syllables. That is, although the syllable hanmay look like a single
character, it is actually composed of three letters: h, a, and
n. Each syllable block consists of two to five letters, including at least
onevowel. These blocks are then arranged horizontally from left to
right or vertically from top to bottom to form words.
Korean syllables consist of a structure which always has an initial
consonant, then a vowel, and sometimes final consonants. All 19
consonants can come before vowels; 'o' before a vowel remains silent
and acts as a place holder.
The two major forms of syllables are as follows;
1) When a vowel has a vertical shape, the syllable is constructed as
follows.

ex)

ex)

, , , , , ...
2) When a vowel has a horizontal shape, the syllable is constructed as

2) 2 (Consonants, vowels and syllables 2)

(1) 2 (Vowels 2)
and : In phonetics, and are single vowels. But they are not
counted in the 10 basic vowels in Korean because '' is formed by adding
+ , and '' from + l.
' is pronounced like the 'e' in the English word 'pen'.
' is pronounced like the 'a' in the English word 'hat'.
These two vowels also form two additional [y] diphthongs:

(2) 2 (Consonants 2)
There are five double consonants and 14 consonants that are made by
adding strokes to the principal consonants. This makes a total of 19
Korean consonants as shown below.
The sound ""(K.R.: kk) sounds like "k" in the English word "sky".
The sound ""(K.R.: tt) sounds like "t" in the English word strike'.
The sound ""(K.R.: pp) sounds like "p" in the English word spy'.
The sound ""(K.R.: ss) sounds like "sc" in the English word

3) (Batchim and syllables)

(1) (Batchim)
Consonants following vowels are called 'batchim' and are at the bottom
half of the syllable. Of the 19 consonants, 16 consonants,

all but ',

, ,' can be used as batchim. The consonant 'o', which is silent

when used before a vowel, has the sound, like the 'ng' in the English
word 'sing', when used as batchim.
The two major forms of syllables are as follows;
1) When a vowel has a vertical shape, the syllable is constructed as
follows.

2) When a vowel has a horizontal shape, the syllable is constructed as

(Korean Bowing)
The Korean people have traditionally considered proper etiquette very
important, and have followed strict rules for bowing according to time,
place and person. The three kinds of bows are as follows:
: This most traditional and formal
bow is only done indoors. You hold
both hands together at the forehead,
carefully descending toward the ground
vertically. Upon reaching the ground,
you then bend from the waist until
both your head and hands touch the
ground.
: This more casual style of bowing
also bends from the waist with the hands
held together, but only to about a 45
angle.

It is an appropriate bow among

friends and peers.

: Many Koreans shake hands after a bow, thereby
blending both Korean and western cultural styles.

initiates the handshake.

All the faces on the bills are the people from the Joseon dynasty. The
portraits of Shinsaimdang (\50,000), King Sejong (\10,000), Yulgok
Yiyi (\5,000), and Toegye Yihwang (\1,000) are on the front sides of
the bills. The back sides have genre paintings or other things closely
related to the person on the front.
On the \50,000 bill, Shinsaimdang is a woman from the Joseon era
who was a poet, writer, painter, and is the mother of Yulgok Yiyi who
is on the \5,000 bill. The King Sejong is on the \10,000 bill. He was
the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty and is famous for creating
hunminjeongeum, which was the foundation of

(Four seasons in Korea)

Korea has four very distinct seasons: Spring is from mid-March to the
end of May. The temperature is warm and can also vary greatly
causing phenomenon like spring colds; Summer is from June to
August. Summer is the rainy season in Korea. The temperature is hot
and the humidity is very high; Autumn is from September to November.
Mild days and clear weather make the autumn months the most
pleasant time of the year. Winter is from December to mid-March; the
weather is usually cold and dry. Heavy snow in the north and east
makes for great skiing conditions.

(Weekend activities)
Korean people do various activities during the weekends. They might
watch movies, climb

mountains, meet their friends, or just have fun.

There are many mountains in Korea, so you can easily see a lot of
people hiking on the mountains during the weekends.
Some people have a good time with their family at parks near their
houses and go to amusement parks. People who like sports often visit
stadiums to watch games on the weekends. However, there are also many
people who stay at home, take it easy, watch TV, and do house chores.
In Korea, there are various kinds of bang (), or rooms, which are
businesses that cater

to specific purposes. For example, there are

(norae-bang), (jjimjil-bang), (manwha-bang),

(PC-bang), etc. A norae-bang is a singing room like karaoke. A
jjimjil-bang is a hot spa place where the people can stay through the
night. A PC-bang is a computer cafe where people can play online
games. A manwha-bang is a place for reading various cartoon books.

(Korean Food)
Korean food is all about balance. A meal is created by keeping the
idea of harmony in mind, with a bit of sweet and salty, spicy and mild,
hot and cold, yin and yang. A "traditional" meal is composed of rice, a
soup, kimchi () and a variety of smaller side dishes, called
"banchan ()." Each person gets his/her own bowl of rice and soup,
while everything else is shared. There are no courses, per se, except
during special "royal" meals, which were reserved for kings, queens
and members of the court. The only time rice isn't served is when the
meal is noodle-based.
The beauty of Korean cuisine is in the variety. There are grains, grilled
meats, salted seafood, vegetables sauted in garlic (/), savory
pancakes (), cold noodles (), steaming hot pots (), porridges
(), salads (/), raw fish (), sauces, simmered dishes (),
soups (/), and so much more.
Rice is the staple of the
Korean

diet. Although not

indigenous to the peninsula,

Koreans embrace it as the
centerpiece of a meal. The
word for cooked rice () is
synonymous with the word
for "meal." Although the grain was originally reserved for ro yalty, due
to its high expense, it became such an important part of the culture
that there are words for it when it's uncooked (), cooked (), and
even when it's slightly burned (). Rice is not only a part of a
meal, it's also used to make rice cakes (), porridges (), mixed with
other grains, mixed with meats and other vegetables (), and even
made into wines and other alcoholic drinks.

(Public Transportation)
Public transportation in Korea is integrated, rapid, convenient, and
efficient and connects to some of the major cities in Korea. You can
find subway systems in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejon, Gwangju, and
Incheon.

KTX the high-speed rail service will take you to some

great destinations in Korea.

The most frequently used public transportation in Korea is the bus.
There are different types of taxis in Seoul, and we can recognize them
by their color. Regular taxis are silver and have a basic fare starting
from \2,600 with meter increases of \100 based on the distance.
Deluxe taxi are black and say Deluxe taxi ( ) on the side.
Their fare is higher than regular taxis.
People in Korea, especially in Seoul, mostly pay for their transportation
fares with

T-money cards. The cards are honored on buses and

subways as well as some taxis now. The benefit of using the card is
that the rider gets a discounted rate. The cards can be purchased and

The Days of Celebration in Korea
,

Childrens Day, Parents Day, Teachers Day, Coming-of-Age

There are a lot of days to celebrate in Korea. In particular, May
is the month for families and school, and Korean people celebrate their
kids and parents.
Korean children look forward to May 5th, which is very special
day for them. Its Childrens Day! They look at Childrens Day as one
of their favorite holidays. They do not go to school, and they receive
all kinds of gifts, and their parents spend time with them.
Following a few days later, May 8th denotes Parents Day. It is
meant to commemorate the efforts of parents raising their children. On
Parents Day, children give carnations and gifts to their parents. They
also spend time together and do things their parents love to do.
Teachers Day, which is on May 15th, is regarded as a special
day for both of teachers and students in Korea. On this day, students
prepare a surprise party and red carnations for their teacher in
appreciation for his or her work. Students also sing the Teachers Day
song and give their teacher thank-you cards and presents.
Coming-of-Age Ceremony is held on the 3rd Monday of May. A
ceremony is held for men and women who are turning 20 years old in

Koreans Vacations
Have you traveled to Korea on your vacation? If not, do you
have a plan to visit Korea? Youll surely love the vacation spots in
Korea because this is where you can see the best nature has to offer,
flavored by the countrys ancient remnants, and enhanced by Korean
sophisticated facilities.
Spring and summer are great times to visit the rolling green tea
fields or the beaches and waterfalls of Koreas beautiful tropical island.
During

fall

and

winter,

you

can

explore

mountains

and

enjoy

world-class skiing and mountain climbing.

There is so much to do on a vacation to South Korea, from
exploring the natural wonders including the high-reaching mountains
and sixteen major rivers, to shopping at some of the traditional markets
and visiting the most sacred temples.
Seoul is considered to be among South Koreas best places to
visit. This city is highlighted by numerous skyscrapers and an array of
architectural masterpieces. Several historic structures are still standing
in some parts of the city.
Korean vacations are a fantastic alternative to the usual beach
getaway and provide a uniquely northeast Asian experience on the
Korean peninsula. There is a variety of vacation packages that make it
easier than ever before to travel to South Korea with relative ease and
without breaking the bank.

Korean Public Etiquette
Etiquette is very important not only to be respectful, but also to
learn about a culture and what its people do. When visiting to a new
country, it is good to know the basics of local etiquette and general
politeness. In South Korea, etiquette is very important, much more so
than in many western countries.
There are a few rules for riding the bus or subway to ensure that
you do not get in trouble. Seats at either end of a subway car are
reserved exclusively for the elderly, disabled, or pregnant women. Give
up your seat to someone who is more in need if the train or bus is
very full. It is good to wait for people to leave the train before
attempting to enter. On the bus, you should only enter through the
front and exit via the middle door.
Its really important to learn how to behave in public places. It is
essential to keep quiet in public places. Koreans find noisiness very
rude. Korea also enforces strict smoking bans in public places, such
as cafes, schools, and playgrounds. Now more places offer smoking
areas separated by glass walls.

Korean Seasonal Foods
Korea

is

marked

by

four

distinct

seasons.

Koreans

have

traditionally believed that eating fresh seasonal foods help them to stay
healthy

throughout

the

year.

In

fact,

seasonal

foods

are

highly

nutritious, so they help enhance immunity and also have the best flavor
when in season.
In spring, many festivals are held to showcase seasonal foods of
different regions, drawing large crowds of tourists. Try delicious spring
fruits, vegetables, and seafood to boost your energy.
Are you staying in Korea during one of the hottest and most
humid times of the year?

You feel like sticking your head in an ice

losing

your

appetite

and

feeling

tired.

Try

naengmyun. The hand-made noodles are served fresh with a delicious,

ice cold soup stock, sliced cucumbers and Korean pear. Samgyetang
is a bowl of hot broth with a whole chicken that is stuffed with
glutinous rice, ginseng, jujube, ginkgo nut, and garlic. Patbingsu is
made of shaved ice topped with sweet red beans and ice cream.
In fall, the harvest is at its peak and the new crop of the year is
rich, as are the hearts of the people. One of the major foods prepared
and

eaten

during

the

Chuseok holiday is songpyeon, a Korean

traditional rice cake that is stuffed with healthy ingredients such as

sesame seeds, black beans, mung beans, cinnamon, pine nut, walnut,
chestnut, jujube, and honey.
The sweet and savory winter street snacks like bungeoppang,

hotteok, baked sweet potatoes, and hoppang, along with the traditional
winter dishes such as gimjang kimchi, tteokguk, and manduguk are
some of the most loved warming winter treats.

Marriage in Korea
In Korea, marriage is considered a meeting of a family and a
family. When a dating couple decides to get married, they first meet
with each side of parents and then arrange a meeting of two families
together. Parents and siblings will attend the meeting to introduce
themselves and discuss the wedding date and place and the plan it
together over a meal.
Typically it is a custom to have a wedding at where the bride is.
So if the brides family and grooms family are from a different
town/city/region, grooms family will rent a bus to provide transportation
to the wedding place for their guests. As the parents of the bride and
groom are the host/hostess of the party, majority of guests of the
wedding is extended family, friends and coworkers of the parents as
well as the friends and coworkers of the bride and the groom.
There is no official engagement period in Korea. There is no
such thing as engagement ring but wedding rings are exchanged at the
wedding ceremony. However, nowadays propose with a ring and event
has become a formality something that men has to do before the
wedding ceremony by influence of western culture.
There are some traditional customs in weddings that can be still

Korean Pop Culture

Korean people have enjoyed songs and dance from ancient
times. This national tradition has continued to be strong all the way to
today.
Over the past decade, Korean popular culture has become a
global phenomenon. The Korean Wave of music, film, television,
sports, and cuisine generates significant revenues and cultural pride in
South Korea. The Korean Popular Culture Reader provides a timely and
essential foundation for the study of K-pop, relating the
contemporary cultural landscape to its historic roots. The essays in this
collection reveal the intimate connections of Korean popular culture, or

Hallyu, to the peninsulas colonial and post-colonial histories, and to

the nationalist projects of the military dictatorship and the
neo-liberalism of twenty-first-century South Korea. Combining
translations of seminal essays by Korean scholars on topics ranging
from sports to colonial-era serial fiction with new work by scholars
based in fields including literary studies, film and media studies,
ethnomusicology, and art history, this collection expertly navigates the
social and political dynamics that have shaped Korean cultural
production over the past century.
Over the past few years, Korean pop culture has been gaining major
recognition abroad with TV dramas, such as Jewel in the Palace, and
highly acclaimed films like Old Boy. This Hallyu phenomenon has
captured the excitement of fans from all over the world. On your trip to
Korea you can visit filming locations and even theme parks dedicated
to your favorite Korean dramas.
