Composition Terms

Rule of Thirds: In the rule of thirds, photos are divided into thirds with two imaginary lines vertically
and two lines horizontally making three columns, three rows, and nine sections in the images.

Golden Triangle: In golden triangle photos, the photo is split into three triangles that contain the
same angles. One right-angled triangle runs diagonally from corner to corner, while the other

two triangles are created by drawing a line that goes from one of the other corners to meet
the diagonal line at a right angle.

Harmony: all parts of an image relate to or complement each other. Harmony can be

Simplicity: keeping the information in a picture simple. The subject is close, and the
background is simple and avoids distractions from the subject.

Rhythm: is the repetition of elements, often with defined intervals between them. Creates a
sense of movement. Regular rhythm occurs when intervals between the elements are close
in size and length. Flowing rhythm gives a sense of movement, often more organic in
nature. Progressive rhythm shows a sequence of forms through a progression of steps.

Camera Angle: refers to the way a shot is composed.


Eye level: the real world angle we see, seeing from eye level
High angle: shows subject from above, camera is angled down toward the subject
Low angle: shows the subject from below

Birds eye: scene is shown from directly above


Slanted: where the camera is purposely titled to one side so the horizon is on an angle
