THE TIMES 2015 ALL-CITY FOOTBALL TEAM

4A teams highlight major awards

LUKE THOMPSON | LTHOMPSON@GANNETT.COM

All-City Defensive MVP

District 1-4A featured some of the areas

best athletes in a season showcasing plenty of
next-level talent.
Northwood wide receiver Marquez Stevenson beat out worthy 5A candidates such as
Parkway quarterback Keondre Wudtee, as
well as Evangel running back Jamarqueza
Mims, a Southern commit, to earn All-City Offensive MVP honors. Stevenson did a little bit
of everything on his way to 1,933 total yards
and 17 touchdowns for the Falcons.
He also faced some stiff competition within his own district, including Woodlawn sophomore running back Trivenskey Mosley and
Benton quarterback Garrett Hable. The 5foot-11, 270-pound senior called it the toughest
the district has been in his career and he faced
plenty of adversity as Northwood went just 2-5
in district play.
It was pretty exciting, said Stevenson,
who committed to Houston over offers from
Baylor, Mississippi State, Notre Dame and
many power conference schools. It gave me a
little bit of competition before I go to college.
North DeSoto running back Delmonte Hall
earned the nod for All-Area Offensive MVP,
and Minden made it a clean sweep for 4A in the
top All-Area awards. Dominant senior defensive end Zikerrion Baker won the Defensive
MVP, and coach Spencer Heard took Coach of
the Year for leading the Crimson Tide to a 9-3
season that ended with a 35-34 second-round
loss to Franklinton.
Calvary safety and Oklahoma commit
Chanse Sylvie prevented a clean sweep for
District 1-4A by winning the race for All-City
Defensive MVP. The Cavs were one of six area
teams to lose to an eventual state champion in
the quarterfinals or later, and no one got closer
than District 1-5A co-champs Evangel.
Only a heartbreaking overtime loss to
Catholic in the semifinals kept All-City Coach
of the Year Byron Dawson from guiding a
dominant young defense to a shot at a 14th
state title in their first season back in 5A. He
said the Eagles played with a chip on their
shoulder all season and got a huge boost from a
56-21 upset of eventual 5A semifinalist Parkway in the district opener.

Chanse Sylvie, DB, Calvary, Sr.

The best player in perhaps the states
best secondary packed the physical
punch at safety to complement shutdown cornerbacks Greedy and LeeLee
Williams. When opposing offenses
inevitably realized running the ball
would be the only way to beat Calvary, Sylvie made his presence felt. The
Oklahoma commit and Class 2A AllState defensive back posted a teamhigh 103 tackles for a defense that
never allowed more than two touchdowns in district play and held 5A
champ Zachary to its lowest total of
the season in its only loss.

The All-City Offensive Player of the Year is

Northwood's Marquez Stevenson.

All-City Offensive MVP

Marquez Stevenson, WR, Northwood, Sr.
Even with defenses honed in on him as the
primary weapon all season for an inconsistent
offense, Stevenson thrived.
He caught 50 passes for 900 yards and eight
touchdowns. But Stevenson wasnt limited to
just catching passes. He also ran 35 times for
445 yards and five more touchdowns.
Stevensons playmaking ability was evident in
the 1,933 total yards he amassed and 17 touchdowns.
Stevenson is committed to the University of
Houston.

Competing for a District 1-5A championship against some of the states best
teams looked like a tall order for Evangel,
considering the Eagles were moving up
from 2A with a roster featuring more than
two-thirds freshmen and sophomores. But
the third-year coach got his team to play
dominant defense and, with the help of
offensive coordinator Denny Duron, utilized the talents of Jamarqueza Mims to
create a powerful running attack that
bowled over Parkway 56-21 to open district
play. Evangel won the next four district
games by at least 24 points before a loss to
Byrd forced the Eagles to share the title.
They still made the Division I playoffs as a
No. 2 seed and would have gone back to
the Dome if not for a remarkable secondhalf comeback by Catholic to erase a 21-0
lead and eventually win 27-21 in overtime.
