THE TIMES 2016 ALL-CITY FOOTBALL TEAM

Pleasant surprises throughout All-City team

JIMMY WATSON JWATSON@SHREVEPORTTIMES.COM

The 2016 football season offered a number of surprises as football seasons typically do but perhaps the biggest was the play of Woodlawn in District 1-4A, one of
the strongest in the state.
Most prognosticators figured it would be a three-team race between North
DeSoto, Minden and Benton with the Crimson Tide as the prohibitive favorite.
While all three of those clubs were contenders until late, it was the Knights that
jumped up and captured the crown by going undefeated in the district.

Because of that 9-1 regular season mark, Woodlawn coach Jerwin Wilson was
selected by The Times staff as the 2016 Coach of the Year.
Another surprise was Loyola coming out of nowhere to go 9-0 to start the season
behind big running back Ethan Stansell. His performance earned the senior Offensive Player of the Year honors.
The only surprise from Evangel was an 0-2 start when the Eagles looked very
beatable against two very formidable opponents. But once coach Byron Dawsons
club got into district play, they were dominating. That was primarily due to a defense led by Davin Cotton, who earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades.

A school looking for some good news to hang its

proud sports history on found it this season with the
Woodlawn football team under Wilson that seemed to
come almost out of nowhere. After Benton, Minden
and North DeSoto battled for the District 1-4A title in
2015, few expected the Knights to run the table in
perhaps the toughest 4A league in the state. But Wilson put together some key parts and directed his
team to a 9-1 overall mark in the regular season.

A remarkable turnaround season for the Flyers

football program could be attributed in large part to
this big load who bruised defenders any time he carried the ball. At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds with speed, Stansell led the Flyers to a 9-0 start in 2016. He rushed for
1,534 yards, averaging a robust 6.4 yards per carry,
and scored 24 touchdowns. When he went down with
an injury on the second series against Mansfield,
Loyola lost for the first time.

The best defender on Louisianas best defensive

team, the 6-foot-3, 280-pound Cotton spent most of his
Friday nights in the opposing teams backfield. Nearly impossible to block in one-on-one situations, the
junior was one of the reasons why the Eagles allowed
just 113 points in the regular season with 5 shutouts.
The big man is talented enough to play on the Evangel
basketball team.

FIRST TEAM ALL-CITY OFFENSE

Justin Rogers,
QB, Parkway, Jr.
Highlights: Already with
multiple SEC offers, this
dual-threat quarterback
completed 159 of 243 passes
for 2,646 yards, second best
in the state, during the regular season. He
tossed 26 touchdowns with just 6 picks.
Kordavion Washington,
RB, Calvary, Jr.
Highlights: Always dangerous any time he touched the
ball during the season,
Washington rushed 205
times for 1,788 yards with 25
touchdowns for the Cavaliers.
Trivenskey Mosley,
RB, Woodlawn, Jr.
Highlights: Anytime the
Knights needed a big play or
wanted to control the time
of possession, they turned to
this versatile back. He
rushed 152 times for 1,039 yards in 8 games.
Terrace Marshall,
WR, Parkway, Jr.
Highlights: There may not
be a better receiver in the
state than this silky smooth
speedster who often leaves
DBs in his wake. Marshall
pulled in 46 passes for 1,093 yards in the regular season, the second best mark in the state.
Doyle Adams,
WR Benton, Jr.
Highlights: The go-to receiver for quarterback Garrett
Hable, Adams was proficient
in picking up yards after the
catch. The 5-11, 185-pounder
snared 62 throws for 582 yards and 13 TDS.
Camron Davis,
WR, Captain Shreve, Sr.
Highlights: The 6-1, 205pound Davis was a sure bet in
the Gators offensive scheme
coming up with big play after
big play. He finished the
regular season with 50 catches for 701 yards,
the second most receptions in the city.

Keldrick Carper,
Ath., Plain Dealing, Sr.
Highlights: Texas A&M
recruit caught 52 passes for
863 yards and rushed 72
times for 384 yards with 15
total touchdowns. He also
had 95 tackles and 4 interceptions.
Montrell Burnham,
OL, Woodlawn, Sr.
Highlights: This 6-foot,
270-pound bruiser was a
key reason why Trivenskey
Mosley was one of the top
rushers in the area over the
past two seasons.
Ethan Harvey,
OL, Evangel, Sr.
Highlights: The 6-4, 285
pound Harvey was the key
reason the Eagles offense
clicked all the way to the
LHSAA Division I state title.
Dalton Meshell,
OL, Parkway, Sr.
Highlights: He helped Robert McKnight run for 767
yards, Justin Rogers for 566
and EJ Williams for 548.
Colton Sessions,
OL, Benton, Sr.
Highlights: The 5-10, 240pounder helped Jermaine
Newton run for 815 yards
and 14 scores.
Ryan Raburn,
C, Loyola, Sr.
Highlights: The run game
headed by Ethan Stansell
had to start with someone in
the trenches and you
couldnt find a more solid
blocker than this 6-4, 290-pound crusher.
Nico Broadway,
K, Haughton, Sr.
Highlights: Converted a
46-yarder at the buzzer to
beat Captain Shreve. Was 29
of 30 on PATs and 11 of 14
on field goals.

FIRST TEAM ALL-CITY DEFENSE

ArDarius Washington,
DB, Evangel, Jr.
Highlights: Any wide receiver that faced the Eagles
defense knew to keep a
wary eye out for the hardhitting Washington, who
made a living out of severing ball carriers
from the football.
Corey Bell,
DB, Woodlawn, Sr.
Highlights: Woodlawn's
offense was so prolific a lot
of people forgot about the
Knights' defense led by this
hard hitter in the secondary.
Woodlawn won several close games because
the Knights were able to get stops when they
needed them.
Jaylyn Thomas,
DB, Airline, Jr.
Highlights: The Vikings
displayed one of the top
defenses throughout 2016
and one of the key reasons
was the consistent play in
the secondary of Thomas.
Johnathan Jones,
DB, Parkway, Sr.
Highlights: Jones arrived at
Parkway as a wide receiver
but became an interception
assassin in the defensive
backfield for the Panthers.
Shimorye Hampton,
DL, Byrd, Sr.
Highlights: Although the
Yellow Jackets suffered
through a multitude of
injuries on both sides of the
ball in 2016, the 6-1, 230pound Hampton was one of the most consistent defenders in the area.
Drew Brewster,
DL, Airline, Sr.
Highlights: The 6-2, 225pound senior anchored an
Airline defensive line that
was stingy against the run
throughout the season for
coach Bo Meeks.

TJ Anderson,
DL, Benton, Jr.
Highlights: There wasnt
much that opposing coaches
could do to keep 6-3, 305pound Anderson away from
the ball.
Dontae Cawthorne,
DL, Fair Park, Sr.
Highlights: Although the
Indians won just two games
this season, the 6-1, 248pound Cawthorne was a
solid performer for coach
Mike Greene on the defensive interior. Teams
usually game-planned to run away from his
side of the ball.
Micah Baskerville,
LB, Evangel, Jr.
Highlights: Among a group
of great linebackers, this
multi-sport standout
plugged holes with speed
and power better than
anyone.
Ashton LaCaze,
LB, Captain Shreve, Sr.
Highlights: Gators coach
Bryant Sepulvado likes to
hang his hat on having a
strong defense and LaCaze
was emblematic of that
effort. The 5-11, 200-pound senior was a key
reason Shreve beat Byrd for the first time in
several seasons this year.
Josh James,
LB, Airline, Sr.
Highlights: A District 1-5A
first-teamer, James displayed
an uncanny knack for being
in the right spot at the right
time to make a key play.
Brian Barber Jr.,
Punter, Calvary, Soph.
Highlights: After attending
multiple kicking camps over
the summer, Barber was
ranked No. 6 nationally
among 2019 punting recruits
by Chris Sailer Kicking. Barber averaged 37.2
yards per kick with 6 downed inside the 20.
