Field Trip Assignment

By: London Bondurant

Title of the field trip:
Fire Department Field Trip
Grade: 4
Standards covered:
4.1.1 Describe and investigate the different ways in which heat can be generated.
4.1.2 Investigate the variety of ways in which heat can be generated and moved
from one place to another. Explain the direction the heat moved.
Plans/goals for the activity:
Before the field trip, we will discuss heat, fire, and chemical reactions. This will give
the students some background information before attending the field trip. The
firehouse will go over these things, plus teach about the equipment in the firehouse
and safety procedures for the students. This trip will be very educational but also
very enjoyable as we will get to tour the firehouse and learn all about what a
firefighter does.
Plans for transportation:
We will be travelling from Ivy Tech Community College at 50 Walnut Street,
Lawrenceburg, Indiana, to the Lawrenceburg Fire Department at 300 W Tate Street,
Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The distance between the two locations is 0.6 miles. We will
be taking school buses to and from the Lawrenceburg Fire Department in case of
poor weather. The cost of renting a school bus can vary from $13 to $19 per hour,
depending on the driver. For this assignment, I will plan for paying the driver
$19/hour. I will also plan on paying $1 per mile for gas.
We will plan on leaving at 9:00am and arriving back to school by 12:00pm. I will
request for the bus driver to arrive at the school half an hour before the 9:00am
departure time to be prepared to stay a half an hour after the planned return time
just in case of any changes. At most, the driver will be needed from 8:30am until
12:30pm. The driver will be paid for 4 hours, which would be $76 ($19 x 4 hours).
The total amount of miles to be driven is 1.6 miles. This will cost an extra $2. The
total cost for transportation, including the drivers hourly rate and cost per mileage,
will be $78.
Drivers Hourly Rate: $19/ hour
Mileage cost: $1/ mile

Time length of trip: Max 4 hours

Distance to be travelled: 1.2 miles (will pay for 2 miles)
$19 x 4 hours= $76
$1 x 2 miles= $2
Total= $78
Plans for meals/snacks/drinks:
The students will have a snack and a drink while at the firehouse, and then they will
be given pizza for lunch once we return to the school. I will ask that all students
bring a drink and a snack (i.e. fruit, chips, etc.) for when we have a snack break at
the firehouse to hold them over until lunch. I will be purchasing a case of water and
some small bags of chips for those who forget to pack a snack.
2 cases of water: $10
chips: $10
For lunch, we will be ordering pizza from Pizza Hut. I will preorder so that the pizza
will be at the school by noon when we return from the firehouse. I will buy four large
cheese pizzas at $10 each. I will prearrange for the school cafeteria to have peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches for those who choose to not eat pizza. I will include a
place on the permission slip to choose between pizza and PB&J. Also, students will
have the option of purchasing a drink from the cafeteria or drinking a water that I
provide.
Four large cheese pizzas: $40
Tip for pizza delivery: $8
Chaperone plans:
On the field trip permission slip, I will have a place for parents to sign up to
chaperone. I will need a minimum of three parent chaperones, which will make for
groups of 6 or 7 students with each chaperone. This will allow me to overlook all of
the groups and take care of snacks, drinks, and speaking to the firehouse
employees when needed. If there are more volunteers to chaperone than needed, I
will choose from those who have not yet been a chaperone. If there are still too
many, I will choose at random and put the others at the top of the list for the next
class field trip.
Description of a follow-up activity related to the desired educational
outcomes of the field trip:

Upon return to school after learning about fire and heat and what generates them,
we will be learning house a fire extinguisher works and eventually we will make our
own. We will make them out of water bottles, baking soda, and vinegar. The
students will learn that the fire extinguisher takes away one of the necessary
ingredients for a fire. This will be a fun, hands-on activity.
Safety/medication issues addressed (copy of permission slip):
The students will be in groups of 6 or 7 with an adult chaperone. The chaperone will
be responsible for the students in his or her group. I will request on the permission
slip for the parents to include any specific information regarding medication their
student will need during the field trip and how to administer it.
