Boreal forests have all four seasons, although harsh winters in the biome make up for over half the year, During spring and summer, the forest warms up enough to allow plants and trees to photosynthesize and grow strong before fall comes, What is Deforestation? Deforestation occurs when trees are cut down in mass quantities and not replanted. Forests are clear cut for many reasons. They can be cut by farmers or farming companies to make way for erops, they can be cut by loggings companies looking to make money or even cut to build roads for transportation through the area. Does Deforestation Affect Ecosystems? When large areas of land are deforested, countless species can be negatively affected. Animals lose their habitats and mass populations of plants can be killed or go extinct. This results in the displacement of the forest’s species, forcing them into other habitats where they may not belong. Forests also play a big part in both carbon and nitrogen cycles. When these biomes are destroyed, there are less trees to take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen or to pass on nitrogen to primary consumers. If an industry moves into the deforested area, neighboring healthy forest can be damaged by the pollution and increased human activity. Total Land Deforested in Canada, 1990-2010 Land Deforested in Canada per Year —Linet = 84000 \ § 55,000 8 3 sa00 SS 40,000 1990 1995 200020082010 Yoar Since 1990, laws put in place by the Canadian government have decreased the amount of land deforested in Canada per year. The largest, drop in land deforested per year was from 1990 t0 1995 with a difference of 21 400 hectares. From 1995 to now, we have stayed below 48 000 hectares deforested per year. This shows that our forests will now last longer than they would have up until 1990. In the future, our land deforested per year should continue to decrease until it no longer poses a threat to our ecosystems. Organisations that Help Greenpeace Canada Greenpeace works to expose to the public and educate them on what happens behind our backs in Canada’s forest biomes, They put pressure on the government to enforce the laws that they have created and make sure that no one cheats through the system. ture source d: The forest division of Natural Resources Canada is the government wing responsible for monitoring and policing what happens in our country’s forests. They use strategies such as integrated landscape management (ILM) to make sure that no land is being needlessly deforested and to keep newly planted areas safe until the trees mature. One example of ILM is letting logging companies harvest land that will be cleared for oil operations anyway, so that the wood won’t be wasted.
