Lapped Splices for Deformed

Bars in Tension

In AS3600, clause 13.1.2.1 states that the development length (L sy.t)

to develop the yield strength (fsy) of a deformed bar in tension shall
be calculated as follows:
k1k2fsy Ab
L sy.t =
25k1db where
(2a + db)fc
k1 = 1.25 for a horizontal bar with
more than 300mm of concrete cast
below the bar; or
= 1.0 for all other bars
k2 = 1.7 for bars in slabs and walls if
the clear distance between
adjacent parallel bars developing
stress is not less than 150mm
= 2.2 for longitudinal bars in beams
and columns with fitments
= 2.4 for any other longitudinal bar

fsy = the yield strength of the reinforcing

bar
Ab = the cross sectional area of the
reinforcing bar
2a = twice the cover to the bar or the
clear distance between adjacent
parallel bars developing stress,
whichever is less
db = the nominal diameter of a bar
fc = the characteristic compressive
cylinder strength of concrete at
28 days

Quick Reference Table Tension Lap Lengths

Choose the section of the table with the relevant cover and concrete
strength (fc) on the same line, refer to this section for the tension lap
length relating to the bar diameter listed in the two shaded sections
(refer below for shading). If the required cover or concrete strength is
not listed use the closest lower values of cover and concrete strength.
Common bar chair sizes (mm) are:
20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 65, 75+

Threading 500PLUS REBAR

The design tensile strength of fine-threaded 500PLUS REBAR (Ntf) can

be determined in accordance with AS4100 Steel Structures. Based on
the results of testing, fine-threaded 500PLUS REBAR has reduced
nominal yield strength equal to 75% of the nominal yield strength
(500 MPa) and a reduced nominal tensile strength equal to 85% of the
nominal tensile strength (540 MPa) based on the thread stress area.
It follows that OneSteel 500PLUS REBAR, when cut with AS1275 metric
threads and fitted with AS1112 Property Class 5 nuts, has the values
of design tensile strength (Ntf) specified in the adjoining table. These
design tensile strengths are based on the effective tensile stress areas
from AS1275, a strength reduction factor = 0.8, and a nominal tensile
strength equal to 0.85 x 540 = 459 MPa.
* Denotes second choice thread size. Nuts may be difficult to obtain. N.B. Engineers should be
aware that threading reinforcing bars this way also reduces the ductility to less than the
minimum requirements for Class N bars specified in AS/NZS 4671.

500PLUS REIDBAR is a hot-rolled, continuously coarse-threaded, steel

reinforcing bar that complies with the requirements in AS/NZS 4671 for
Class N reinforcement. When used in conjunction with accessories, it offers
the designer flexibility to overcome challenging design or buildability issues.
These tables list the material properties and the common accessories
available for 500PLUS REIDBAR. A 500PLUS REIDBAR Design Guide and
case studies are available from OneSteel Reinforcing or www.reinforcing.com.
All accessories, except nuts, develop the breaking strength of 500PLUS REIDBAR
* Lower characteristic value ** The load that a threaded insert can provide is dependent on
its anchorage (refer Design Guide) *** Nuts have a minimum strength of 1.15fsy

A standard hook or cog provides half of the tensile development length for that end of the bar, measured from the end of the bar.
o

Standard Hook

A standard hook consists of a 135 or 180 bend around the appropriate pin with a straight extension of:
-10db or 100mm whichever is greater for shear reinforcement in beams
- 8db or 140mm whichever is greater for plain round bars
- 4db or 70mm whichever is greater for all other applications

Standard Cog

A standard cog consists of a 90 bend around the appropriate pin, but not greater than 8db having the
o
same total length as required for a 180 hook of the same diameter bar.

Bending & Rebending

500PLUS REBAR

Bending/Rebending & Welding Practice Notes

A number of situations may arise where bars must be bent or
rebent on site, or where pre-bent bars must be straightened.
For smaller diameter bars (i.e., 10, 12 & 16mm), this is
preferably performed at ambient temperature, as this has the
least effect on steel properties. Please observe the following:
The initial bend should be performed around a mandrel
or former of diameter specified in the relevant code, and
generally not less than 4db.
Rebending or straightening should be performed using a
powered bending tool, or a pipe with internal diameter
not greater than 2x the nominal bar diameter.
Do not use impact blows to bend or rebend the steel.
Take care to minimise surface damage and
visually inspect rebent area for cracks.

* The bending limits shown in this column have been specified in AS 3600 to minimise spalling
of the galvanised coating.

For larger diameter bars, the application of heat (e.g. from an

acetylene flame) may be used to reduce the bending force, but a
reduction in bar strength may result.
Further details on bending/rebending & welding 500PLUS REBAR
can be found at www.reinforcing.com
A pipe must not be used to make the initial bend, or to rebend back past the
straight position. Rebending of bars that have been bent prior to galvanising is
not recommended, as cracking on the inside of the original bend may result.

Heating & Welding 500PLUS REBAR

After heating, the resulting ambient temperature properties of

reinforcing steels may be significantly altered. This is an important
consideration if heat has been applied to assist with bending bars,
through welding, or the effect of fire. To effectively manage the
temperature control during the heating or welding process the use
of temperature control crayons is recommended.
Heating
Heating should be avoided if the original bar properties are required.
Bending should always be around a former of the appropriate size
(refer processing to AS3600). AS3600 states in clause 19.2.3.1 that
reinforcement may be bent hot, provided that:
i) the steel is heated uniformly through & beyond the portion to be bent
o
ii) the temperature of the steel does not exceed 600 C
iii) the bar is not cooled by quenching

iv) if during heating the temperature of the bar exceeds 450 C, the design
yield strength of the steel after bending shall be taken as 250 MPa.
Welding
500PLUS REBAR produced by the TEMPCORE process and microalloyed
500PLUS coiled rebar has a maximum carbon equivalent (Ceq) of 0.44.
max and, as such, requires no pre-heating prior to welding. Pre-heating
is not required when welded in accordance with the AS/NZS1554 part
3. Hydrogen controlled electrodes will be required for all weld types,
and matching strength electrodes will be required for butt welds.
Note: Some types of welded splices can reduce the ductility of the
connected bars.

500PLUS BAMTEC
Reinforcing Carpets
Benefits
BAMTEC is the worlds fastest steel fixing system. It involves
designing and prefabricating reinforcing steel carpets to a
wide range of shapes and sizes.
Individual rebars are welded to flexible steel straps, which can
connect up to hundreds of bars together, and the carpet is rolled
up for handling and transport.
The carpets can contain different types and sizes of bars, have
bars at different spacings and can accommodate complex
shapes and penetrations.
When needed on site, the carpet is simply lifted into place and
unrolled onto continuous bar chairs.

Super-fast construction
Save up to 80% on steel-fixing costs
Ideal for suspended slabs, slab on ground,
CRCP and tilt-up panels
Improves cost effectiveness of slab construction
Variable spacing and bar diameters available
Improved accuracy and quality
Less material waste and scrap
Design assistance available
Less bending and carrying
Easier chairing and no bars to sort
Simpler marking plan

Size limits
The minimum diameter of bar which can be used with
BAMTEC is 10mm. The largest diameter used is 32mm
Class N 500PLUS REBAR.
The minimum bar spacing is 50mm up to a maximum
spacing of 400mm. BAMTEC comes in widths from
1.8m minimum to 15m. Maximum mass per carpet is
approximately 1.6 Tonne.
