EXEMPLAR IV
Exemplar IV: Case Study
Summary of Assignment
As a requirement for our CSP 662B class, Counseling Interventions with Children and
Adolescents, I developed a case study on a student that we were working with at the time. As
part of the assignment, I conducted interviews with teachers, parents, and the student. In

addition, I observed the students different classrooms and completed record reviews. This was a
chance to gain an overall understanding of the student. A step like this is important in
developing an intervention for a student because it allows the counselor to see all the aspects of
the child and then move forward with something effective.
Standard 21: Personal and Social Development
During this assignment and throughout my school year at Potter Jr. High, I met with the
student on several occasions. Some of these interactions involved developing goals for the
student, both academically and personally, and then tracking them weekly. In addition, this
particular student struggled with anger management at times. As a result, another technique used
was to review some anger management strategies along with stress management skills. These
techniques helped the student behave better in class and focus more on his school work. Having
interactions like this with this student allowed me to become proficient in completing the
personal and social development standard because a lot of our meetings focused on just that.
While with many other students I focused on academic development, the student that was part of
this assignment required more help in the personal and social domain.
Standard 25: Individual Counseling
Similar to what was stated above, I was able to also provide individual counseling for the
student. One of the main components of this assignment was to develop an intervention that

would benefit the student based on what was found during the research period. In order to pick
an intervention that I felt would best address the students needs, I had to understand all the
variables that existed in his life. I used many counseling techniques during these sessions and
actively listened to the student when he spoke. In addition, I also tried to use solution-focused
brief counseling with him because we did not have a lot of time together. After all of these
activities were completed, I believe that they enhanced my individual counseling skills and
allowed me to master this standard.
Standard 27: Collaboration, Coordination, & Team Building
Although this assignment relied heavily on building an intervention for a single student,

it required a lot of collaboration and coordination to execute it. The interventions that were being
explored were exercises that would have to be completed both with me in a counseling session
and in the classroom. For example, we put in place a cool-down-counseling pass where the
student was able to use this pass to exit his classroom if he felt he was getting too angry to the
point where he could not control it. This was vital to his intervention because if he was allowed
to come to the counseling office, we would go over a new anger management strategy. His
teachers had to be aware of this and work with us on allowing him to use this a maximum of
three times per week. Being able to coordinate with all his teachers and have their support made
the difference for the students success in their classroom. As a result, I have become proficient
in collaboration, coordination, and team building because of the extensive amount of it that took
place while completing this assignment.
Conclusion
Overall, my case study assignment allowed me to hone my skills in persona and social
development, individual counseling, and collaboration. There were a lot of moving parts to this

EXEMPLAR IV
project that all came together and allowed me to become proficient in these areas. My student
was able to benefit from the intervention that we implemented and at the end of the school year,
we found that his anger outburst has significantly declined and that his grades were slowly
improving.
