Bevel gear Design Procedure

Design procedure for bevel gear

1.Identify weaker member (gear or pinion)

a. Obtain allowable static stress for given material using
the Old table 12.7 pg no.186
d1 (for pinion)
d2 (for gear)
b. Calculate No. Of teeth and speed on gear by using relation
n1/n2= = Z2/Z1 = d2/d1
c. Calculate the pitch angle for both pinion (1)and gear (2)
for acute/right/obtuse angle ----New DB- 217 pg no, ld DBd. Calculate formative No. Of teeth on pinion ze1 & gear ze2,
from old DB pg-173, new DB pg-218

e.
For given pressure angle and tooth form
calculate lewis form factor y for pinion and
gear(pg no.163 EQ 12.17a, 12.17b, 12.17c)

f. Calculate strength factor d y for pinion and gear i.e

d1 y1 < d2 y2 pinion is weaker
d1 y1 > d2 y2 gear is weaker

Design should be based on weaker member

2. Design based on weaker member

a.Pitch circle diameter of weaker member
d= m z
from old DB 12.75, new DB 12.34(a)

b.Velocity (v= d n / 1000)---- d in mm , n in rps

c.Cone distance (L) from old DB pgno.172 eqno.12.74, New DB pg -217,
eq12.33)
d.Face width ( old DB pg no.173 EQ no. 12.84a, new DB pg-218 ,eq 12.36 c
or 12.36 d)
e.Tangential tooth load for weaker member (pg no.164 EQ no. 12.20a)
f. Assume velocity factor Cv for gear (teeth are cut by form factor or for
generated teeth )(old DB pg no.174 EQ no. 12.86a and 12.86b, New DB pg
219, eq12.38a,12.38b)
g.Tangential tooth load for weaker member from lewis equation (old DB
pg no.173EQ no. 12.85, New DB pg-218, eq 12.37)
h.Rewrite correct values of d , v , b , Cv, Ft after calculating m
i. Check for stress
allowable stress all = ( d cv )all
induced stress ind = ( d cv )ind = Ft L/ b Y m (L-b)
if ind < all then design is satisfactory

b.
Check for wear load (old DB pg no.174 EQ no.
