Checklist to be read by all Deck Officers as part of joining familiarization.

THE SIGNAL IS THREE LONG BLASTS ON WHISTLE / ALARMS

1 RELEASE BRIDGE WING MAN OVERBOARD FLOAT, regardless of whether any other buoy has
been thrown over.Activate the MOB command on GPS
2 COMMENCE WILLIAMSON TURN, or shortest / quickest turn in the prevailing traffic and sea
room.
3 Ring SBE, or the action required by the vessels machinery set up.Vessel to be at full manoeuvring
status before turn is completed, so as to be able to send away boat, safely, when close to the
MOB position.
4 Give the alarm signal, as soon as possible. If public address system available, announce MAN
OVERBOARD several times, and the side, if known.
5 Radio communication to be established as quickly as possible onboard and Emergency Squad to
be instructed to PREPARE THE RESCUE BOAT.
6 Support Squad to provide LOOKOUTS as quickly as possible, to Monkey Island / bridge wings and
forecastle ( astern on PCTC). Focsle Lookouts to be provided with radio communication and
Binoculars SEARCHLIGHTS to be used at night
7 Data to radio room and MAN OVERBOARD MESSAGE BROADCAST. Also on VHFas soon as
possible
8 As far as possible try to pick up survivor(s) in water, by alternate means i.e lowering cargo or
gangway net overside, pilot ladder, accomodation ladder etc . Due to safety of own crew the Boat to
be lowered as last resort.
9 Rescue boat when lowered must be commanded by experienced Deck Officer, ( preferably Chief
Officer, Engineer to assist with engine. Radio communication with boat to be maintained.
Blankets to be put into boat before launching. also the portable resuscitator, when provided.
Sufficient boat crew to be able to attend survivor.
10 First Aid Party to prepare for receiving survivor.
Ship Specific Instructions

Note 1 : Action required for specific vessels to be decided by Master and Chief Engineer and posted in
wheelhouse and ECR. To be reviewed on change of Master and /or the Chief Engineer
Note 2 : Portable radio handler in the rescue boat is best positioned at the bow, away from Engine noise.
Note 3 : Procedure is the same , whether person is from own vessel, or another. Any one seeing person in the
water should throw nearest lifebuoy and raise alarm.
