Section 2, Vessel Operation Subject : TEMPORARY IMMOBILISATION Appr. by : Made by:
Objectives
To prevent the safety of a vessel being jeopardised during harbour steaming and after immobilisation.
In open sea
Vessel to show required light signals or signal figures, in accordance with the "International Rules of the Road"
Bridge watch / lookout to be maintained, ready to give additional sound and light signals to warn approaching vessels
In Port
If using vessel's own cargo gear, operations shall be suspended. Inform supercargo and agents of the problems, and
give a realistic estimate of the time needed for repairs
If major and time consuming repairs are necessary, the Company should be informed. It may be to the vessel's
advantage to inform the Company and request they call in assistance from service companies to speed up repairs
The agents and the Company Superintendents may be able to supply the vessel with valuable information regarding
repairs and service companies available
If service is not available, the Master shall consult with the Chief Engineer and make the necessary decisions
As each situation is different it is difficult to give a definitive process, however sound judgement, good seamanship and
the ability to listen to and accept good advice will be critical factors.
Engine Failure/Black-out
If there is a danger of black-out during steaming in harbour or in other restricted waters, the bridge/Master and Chief
Engineer should be notified immediately:
Additional crew to be called out as required
Prescribed routines to be followed / initiated
Redundancy systems to be started up as found necessary
