Basic French Horn Fingerings

Professionals have their own method

for combining the F and Bb sections of
the double horn. It is a very important
decision to make. Professionals consider
the range from 2nd line to G to third
space C as one in which the shift can
be made on any note, and choose the
shifting note usually with reference
to the way the part is written and the
tessitura of notes in the higher register.
The thumb valve on modern French

horns works as easily and flexibly as

any other valve. There is little reason
why it should not be used as often as
seems expedient. If the player wishes
to change from one horn to another, he
may consult the Bb fingering chart, a
basic, elementary chart. Many alternate
fingerings are possible throughout
much of the practical playing range.
The fingerings given here do provide a
good foundation.
