for combining the F and Bb sections of the double horn. It is a very important decision to make. Professionals consider the range from 2nd line to G to third space C as one in which the shift can be made on any note, and choose the shifting note usually with reference to the way the part is written and the tessitura of notes in the higher register. The thumb valve on modern French
horns works as easily and flexibly as
any other valve. There is little reason why it should not be used as often as seems expedient. If the player wishes to change from one horn to another, he may consult the Bb fingering chart, a basic, elementary chart. Many alternate fingerings are possible throughout much of the practical playing range. The fingerings given here do provide a good foundation.
