Semester Long Project Proposal
This groups Semester Long Project topic is Carowinds. Carowinds is a large theme park
resting on the border of North Carolina and South Carolina. This theme park is a very wellknown theme park in the region. It has been a large part of the community since it was built and
this group thought it would be interesting to conduct the research and explain how this theme
park brings jobs, money, and excitement to the area. In this project, we plan to talk about the
starting points, the history over the years, how it has grown, and the impact that it has on the
Charlotte area. We plan to talk specifically about who built the theme park, when it was built,
annual revenue, some of the most featured rides over the years, and how many jobs the theme
park supports.
We plan to approach this project by designing a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation in a
timeline format. This means that we will begin by discussing how the theme park was started,
how large it originally was, the number of jobs the theme park supported, and the money that it
made in its early years. We then hope to take the audience throughout the years in Carowinds
explaining how the park has grown, new rides that have been introduced, the money that the park
makes per year now, and the number of jobs that Carowinds offers. We also plan to look into the
change in ownership of the theme park going from being owned by Paramount to being owned
by Cedar Fair. We will determine if this change in ownership helped or hindered the park and the
money that it brings in. In addition, we plan to take a look into the seasonal things that

Carowinds does or used to do, including Scarowinds and Winterfest. We will look into how
much extra money these events have made the park, and also how many more people Carowinds
has had to give jobs to during these time periods to work these events.
This group feels that the most effective way present this information is in a timeline
format because it will explain how the park has grown over the years in a very clear and concise
manner. Additionally, in doing it this way, it is much easier for the audience to understand than
continuing to go forward and backward in time. We, as a group, feel like the audience will care
about the information that we will present because it will show how many jobs Carowinds
provides and the amount of revenue and tourism brings to the area in which the audience lives.
We also feel that this will be interesting to the audience because Carowinds is one of the largest,
most exciting attractions in the area.
The responsibilities for this project will be distributed evenly amongst the four group
members. Each person will be responsible for a couple of the specific topics that we wish to talk
about in the project including: income, jobs, featured rides and attractions, and how this theme
park effects the Charlotte area. Each group member will also be responsible for finding at least
two or three of the ten sources that the group is required to have. After conducting the research,
the group will then come together to present the information that they have found to the rest of
the group members. The group will then set up times in which it will meet to work on the
PowerPoint for the presentation and rehearse the presentation.
The group has collectively decided that all of the research must be completed by Spring
Break. This way, after break, the group will be able to focus on pulling all of the information
together and creating the presentation for the project. The group plans to have the PowerPoint

presentation completed by the second week of April. By doing so, the group will have time to
rehearse and prepare for the in-class presentation.
