THE ACC AND THE NFL DRAFT

ACC CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE NFL DRAFT PERFORMANCE

CONFERENCE TIED FOR MOST FIRST-ROUND DRAFT PICKS WITH NINE
47 PLAYERS DRAFTED, SECOND-BEST IN LEAGUE HISTORY; 89 IN PAST TWO DRAFTS
ACC HAS 11 STRAIGHT YEARS OF 31 OR MORE PLAYERS SELECTED IN THE NFL DRAFT

Over the past 11 years, the ACC has enjoyed an

unprecedented run in the National Football Leagues
draft.
The ACC tied the Pac-12 for the most firstround draft picks in 2015 with nine.
In the 2015 draft, a total of 47 ACC players were
selected, the second-highest in ACC history, bettered
only by the total of 51 in 2006, when the Conference
set a record for a 12-team league.
The 47 players were also the second-highest total
of any conference in this years NFL Draft, bettered
only by the SECs 54. The Pac 12 was third with 39
followed by the Big 10 (35) and the Big 12 (25).
Florida State set a seven-round NFL Draft record
(since 1994) for a three-year period when it led all
schools with 11 2015 selections, giving the Seminoles
29 drafted players in the 2013 (11), 2014 (7) and 2015
Drafts.
Louisville was second among all schools
nationally with 10 players selected.
A total of 30 players were drafted from the
ACCs Atlantic Division alone, more than only four
total conferences and more than any other Division in
college football.
Since the 2005 season the ACC has now had 401
players chosen in the NFL Draft, including 65 firstround picks.
Of the 186 ACC players drafted in the past five
NFL Drafts, 173, or 93 percent were still in the NFL as
of May 1, 2015; 75.2 percent are still with the teams
that drafted them.
Begining with the 2009 NFL Draft, current ACC
schools have had nine wide receivers selected in the
first round of the the NFL Draft, the most of any
league.
Miami has had a player selected in every NFL
Draft beginning with 1975, or 41 consecutive years.
Virginia and Florida State have each had a player
chosen each year since 1983, or a total of 32 straight
years.
The ACC began the 2015 Draft in a strong
fashion with three players chosen among the first nine
and six of the first 19 players drafted.
The ACC had the Alpha and Omega of the 2015
NFL Draft. The ACC had the first player chosen in
FSU QB Jameis Winston, and the last player draftedin
Mr Irrelevant, Louisville TE Gerald Christian, the
256th and final player selected.

ACC Players in 2015 NFL Draft

When Florida State QB Jameis Winston was

W
tthe first player taken in the 2015 NFL Draft
he became the eighth player from a current
h
ACC school to be chosen No. 1 overall.

Louisvilles DeVante Parker and Miamis

Phillip Dorsett made the ACC the only
league in the nation with two WRs in the
first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

ACC Draft Notes

Since the 2006 NFL Draft the ACC has had 24 defensive ends or outside linebackers--the glamour positions of defense--selected in the first two rounds, far and away the most of any conference in the nation during that time outdistancing the SEC (18), Big Ten (16), Pac-12 (11), and
the Big 12 and Big East with 6 each.
Miami has had at least one player in every NFL Draft since 1974, a string of 41 consecutive years, the current longest streak in the ACC. The next longest streak belongs jointly to
Virginia and Florida State, who each have had at least one player chosen in every NFL Draft
begining in 1984, a span of 32 straight years. Virginia Tech (22) also has a significant streak.
In all, current ACC teams have had a total of eight players chosen as the first overall selection in the NFL Draft, with the most recent being NC States Mario Williams, who was
tabbed first in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. Miami (Vinny Testaverde, 1987,
Tampa Bay; and Russell Maryland, 1991, Dallas) and Virginia Tech (Bruce Smith, 1985,
Buffalo and Michael Vick, 2001, Atlanta) each had two top selections while Virginia (Bill
Dudley, 1942, Steelers) and Syracuse (Ernie Davis, 1962 each had one. Also, NC States
Roman Gabriel, the No. 2 overall selection in the 1962 draft, was chosen No. 1 in the AFL
Draft by the Oakland Raiders.
Miami has had 11 players taken as the 7th overall pick or higher in the NFL Draft. Florida
State is second with 10, followed by North Carolina and NC State with five each and Virginia with four players tabbed 7th or better. Miami has actually had seven (7) players taken
as the first, second or third overall pick.
