Student Name: Michael Kesler

2/1/16

Weeks # 1, 2, & 3? Dates: 1/11/16

Internship Hours: Two Week Total: 115.45

Cumulative Total to Date: 115.45
Site Supervisor: Chad Keefer
Agency: Vivint Smart Home Arena
Brief description of the past two weeks duties:
Scheduling, attending to issues or conflicts during events, making event
notes for game day staff, production and staff meetings, and assisting the
Director of Guest Service and the Director of Event Security with relevant
work.
How are you experiencing a relevant and challenging use of your skills?
Challenges that come up during events are always challenging. We are
frequently tackling new issues are we are forced to make judgment calls
based on the relevant information and resources we have. This is challenging
and you can frequently find times when you are second guessing your own
decisions however, once you make a decision, you must stick to it for better
or worse.
What did you learn from the experience?
The biggest thing that Im learning is how much the part-time staff members
rely on your leadership and example. Though I am honest with the staff
members in regards to my experience in event security, my opinion matters
and Im looked to for a smart and fair decision.
What worked well? What would you change next time?
I think everything has worked fine. I just need to make sure that as I move
forward with this career position that I dont second guess myself and I
continue to stick to my guns.
Please describe the supervision you are receiving.

I receive vary limited supervision as my job requires firm commitment. My

results show every game day and if something isnt done then staff members
arent able to clock in or find they do not have adequate information to
complete their job duties as required.
Journal Entry 1
My internship is with Vivint Smart Home Arena, home of the Utah Jazz.
Vivint Smart Home Arena is a part of the greater Larry H. Miller group of
companies within the Larry H. Miller Sports and Entertainment group. While
these companies coordinate with one another and work hand in hand
frequently to achieve commons goals, each is completely different and
brings revenue and business in different forms.
Larry H. Miller Sports and Entertainment began in the 1980s when
Larry H. Miller purchased a minority ownership in the Utah Jazz in an attempt
to keep the struggling team in Utah. Larry, at great financial risk to himself
and his family began the project on what is now Vivint Smart Home Arena to
build a permanent home for the Utah Jazz and have a great facility for
members of the Utah community to gather and seek great entertainment.
Larry H. Miller Sports and Entertainment consists of almost a dozen
different companies that include Vivint Smart Home Arena, Utah Jazz, Idaho
Stampede, Salt Lake Bees, KJZZ, Megaplex Theaters, Saxton Horne, All-Star
Catering, Fanzz, 1280 The Zone, Tour of Utah, and Just Sports. Our mission is
to Enrich Lives, our vision is To be the best place in town to work and the
best place in town to do business, and our values are Integrity, Hardwork,
Stewardship, and Service.

Almost every one of my colleagues has a 4 year degree, mostly in

communications. Though many of our senior executives have advanced
degrees, many have worked extremely hard and gain a lot of experience to
get them where they are currently at. Though many degrees are found within
our organization, not all of these people do something in relation to their
degree. An example is that one of our HR Recruiters has a degree in
Accounting while our Director of Event Security has a degree in Sociology
from the University of Utah. It varies but almost everyone has an extremely
large knowledge of their job duties and experience to back that up.
Salaries range, as an entry level manager, my salary is in the 40,000 to
50,000 range to start out. I imagine as others progress to director positions
or VP or President positions that the salary will continue to increase and grow
as more time is put into the company and your work.
This agency was the perfect fit for me. I started here in 2010 as a food
service employee in All-Star catering and I continued to use that to my
advantage to progress and intern and work with various different companies
within Larry H. Miller Sports and Entertainment. This is almost exactly what I
want to be doing in this stage of my career. Though I will look to move into
Baseball Operations later on in my career, dealing with the gameday issues
and being a problem solver is exactly what I would like to be doing at this
time.
I plan to stay here for quite some time moving forward. This position is
stable and provides me with year-round work and entertaining job

responsibilities that challenge me regularly. I look forward to my future with

Larry H. Miller Sports and Entertainment.
