Reflection

ETHS 2430
Learning Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course I feel as though I do have a greater
understanding of challenges that Mexican Americans have faced and continue to face. Some of
the struggles that Mexican Americans faced in the past were: the fights for the civil rights of
United Farm Workers, the fight for education changes to be made with segregation, the major
political party of Mexican Americans, La Raza, among many other challenges faced by Mexican
Americans.
Learning Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course I am able to understand event that took
place in Mexican Americans history. One of my favorite lessons was on the painting of
Guadalupe. It was interesting to hear about the story of Juan Diego and his determination and
faith. It was also interesting that the painting itself had so much research done on it that
supported different components of the story of Juan Diego. Such as the type of paint, the type of
cloth, and the weather that day.
Learning Outcome 3: Throughout this class we did a number of lectures that involved
presentations with graphs, tables, and research. I was able to learn more statistical information as
it pertained to Latinos. Such as the high rate of Domestic violence as it compared to other
cultures and ethnic groups.
Learning Outcome 4: This class did require us to think critically. In particular, the assignment
where we examined the murals, we had to think critically about what the mural was saying and
relate it to lessons we had in class.

Learning Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course I do feel I have a greater understanding
about issues faced within the Latino community. I also understand the grave importance of
cultural competence and the number of standards that go into this; ethics and values, selfawareness, cross cultural knowledge, cross cultural skills, empowerment and advocacy, and so
forth.
SLCC Student Learning Goals
Learning Outcome #2- Upon successful completion of any program, students should be able to
communicate effectively. I do feel like I can communicate better than the start of this course. As
I learned more about the history and circumstances for Mexican Americans I as able to develop
and communicate my own understanding of these lectures.
Learning Outcome #3- Upon successful completion of any program, students should develop
quantitative literacies necessary for their chosen field of study. I have learned more about
Latino statistics, what I have learned will help me in my field of study. As I pursue a career in
social work I will have clients who are Latino and who relate to the history we learned about in
class, having and understanding of this will help me to see through their lenses.
Learning Outcome #4- Upon successful completion of any program, students should be able to
think critically. What I have learned in this class will help me in my life. I have learned how to
dig deeper and think critically. Such as when analyzing paintings, looking at the painting is one
thing but processing what it means and what the artist is trying to convey required critical
thinking that we got to experiment in this class.
In Conclusion:

Participating in this class has taught me more about the world around me. By learning about a
culture other than my own, it has opened my eyes to how other people see the world and the
struggles that Mexican Americans have gone through. I do have a better understanding of
cultural competence and know that I need to strive for cultural competence in my personal life,
and in my career.
