3. Executive Summary
I have got acquainted with domestic & outbound tour operations during my
summer training.
I have learnt a host of things about:
File handling
Hotel bookings
Tele-Calling
Itinerary planning
Apart from this I came to know about various trends in flow of domestic
tourists, their preference, their expectations, behaviour etc. Also I came to
know about how division of labour in an organisation plays its part to
accomplish targets. Based on that I have made my project.
Problems I faced while doing my project were frequent resigning of the top
staff, no field work given by the company as such though the staff was
friendly.

Colorful Vacations Pvt. Ltd. - Outgoing Tour Operation.

This company is engaged in offering package tours to the tourist going towards
the World from India.

The business is solicited through a network of Tour Operators in the main source
markets.

The contacts are established by regularly visiting the foreign agent in his office,
thru e-mails etc.

The marketing efforts are supplemented by participation in the International

Travel/Tourism Fairs, Media Advertisements, organising study tours etc.

Our marketing efforts are complemented by our sales and marketing

representation in different countries.

It sells the idea to the foreign agent to include India in their brochure and once

having succeeded in doing so the challenge is to have as many different tours to

cover different areas of the country.

The Product innovation team keeps itself abreast with the new facilities.

The buying team negotiates rates with the suppliers.

The costing team uses these rates to make a firm price offer to the foreign agent
for the predefined tour.

Once a group is booked, the operation department takes over and books all the
services as per the itinerary.

The transport department provides the suitable transport and the Tour Leaders
department provides the suitable tour leader.

Insurance is the part of documentation, in which a client must need travel
insurance from the date of departure to the date of return, but in some
countries like Norway, travel insurance should be issued for 15 days extra
from the date of return. This policy is designed to meet the needs of any
resident Indian family travelling abroad. In some countries, it is compulsory
for visitors to have a medical insurance cover. After issuing the travel
insurance of a client, company has to settle the issued policy in the account
of the customer. For issuing travel insurance policy, Thomas cook has a tie
up with Bajaj Allianz.
Basically Thomas Cook has divided travel insurance in two different plans
namely:
1. Family Elite
2. Travel Insurance

Family Elite: This policy is designed to meet the needs of any resident
Indian family travelling abroad. In some countries, it is compulsory for
visitors to have a medical insurance cover. This plan is recommended for the
families travelling abroad basically on a holiday. This plan provides
coverage upto USD 50,000 for each immediate family member and it is
more cost effective than a single trip policy.

Salient Features:

Medical Cover: The policy basically provides cover for medical

expenses for the entire family as a floater (overall cover).
Personal Liability: This feature covers the liability of insured while
abroad, arising out of death or injury of third party or damage to the property of
third party upto USD 50,000.

Medical treatment is expensive overseas and can become a major
financial problem in case of any emergency / accident.

foreign currency of the country in which a claim arises is reimbursed.
Besides, the foreign currency allowances allowed by the host
Country can be conserved as the premium is paid in Rupees in home country.
The Claim procedure is very simple. The policy document that the

the southern tip of Africa. It is divided into nine provinces and has 2,798
kilometers (1,739 mi) of coastline. To the north of the country lie the
neighboring territories of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe; to the east

South African territory. South Africa is a multi-ethnic nation and has diverse
cultures and languages. Eleven official languages are recognized in
the constitution. Two of these languages are of European origin: South
African English and Afrikaans, a language which originated mainly
from Dutch that is spoken by the majority of white and Coloured South

Australia
Australia officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in
the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian
continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in
the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total
area. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New
Guinea to the north; the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to
the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east. For at least 40,000
years before European settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was
inhabited by indigenous Australians, who belonged to one or more of
roughly 250 language groups. After discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606,
Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and settled
through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26
January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the
continent was explored and an additional five self-governing Crown
Colonies were established.

New Zealand
New Zealand is an island country located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean.
The country geographically comprises two main landmasses that of
the North and South Islands and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is
situated some 1,500 kilometers (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman
Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometers (600 mi) south of the Pacific island
nations of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was
one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New
Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of both animal and plant life.
Most notable are the large number of unique bird species, many of which
became extinct after the arrival of humans and introduced mammals. With a
mild maritime climate, the land was mostly covered in forest. The country's
varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks owe much to the tectonic
uplift of land and volcanic eruptions caused by the Pacific and IndoAustralian Plates clashing beneath the earth's surface.

12. FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Other then outbound tourism, India has a large potential for inbound tourism. Thus
various measures should be taken to promote India as a shining destination for foreign
clientels.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Positioning:
With the help of Incredible India campaign like initiatives, image of India as a
tourist destination should be encouraged.
Tax structure:
We need to rationalize the tax at a significantly lower level and have only a single
tourist transport tax with vehicles being permitted to travel in a region of two or
three contiguous states avoiding inconvenience to passengers.
Land:
State governments must be persuaded to create hotel land banks which can
enable swifter allocation of land at affordable costs.
Government land belonging to the railways and defence can be identified for
setting up budget hotels which can support rising domestic tourist activity.
Helping hand:
Recognised industrial houses or established hotel groups can easily raise debt in

the domestic market but should be encouraged to access external commercial

borrowing in view of the prevalent low rates of interest regime. A mechanism for
unbundling of risk including cost of exchange rate fluctuations can be devised; a
line of credit for external borrowing can be extended through State Bank of India,
ICICI Bank or IDBI.
To encourage international hotel chains which have evinced keen interest in
India needs to be fully capitalized as foreign investments would ease pressure on
available domestic finances.

Civil Aviation:
Improved air connectivity, both within the country and to international
destinations, is vital for sustaining increased tourism activity.
However, it is critical that Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) which attracts sales tax
ranging from 4% to 25% in the states needs to be harmonized and ATF declared a
deemed good making it eligible for 4% central sales tax.
The human resource component of major civil aviation expansion while
primarily the responsibility of the civil aviation ministry, has important
implication for tourism development.
Clarity in the policy for creating regional aviation hubs through public-private
partnership.
Policies relating to helicopters to improve connectivity with regional aviation
hubs needs to be realistic to attract private investment.
Roads:
Roads leading from national or state highways to important tourist heritage sites
need upgradation in a number of places. These connecting roads should be
declared part of the national highway being executed by the Highway

Development Authority. Road connectivity to the 20 world heritage sites deserves

priority.
A large number of new petrol outlets are coming up along national and state
highways. The tourism ministry in concerted effort must cast an obligation on the
owners to provide wayside amenities, particularly hygienic toilets and other
requirements for travellers.
The connectivity for a rural tourist circuit should be accorded priority. This will
open up tourism in the rural areas, which is particularly important in view of a
dramatic increase in the number of tourists.

Marketing strategy:
A s we have seen in the pie-chart, most of the tourists in India, come
from USA &UK, customized package should be given to them.

About 20 million NRIs are there all over the world, package should me made
concerning them .Modern tourists want engaging in the places they visit,
volunteer tourism, luxury &vacation home spiritualism, private islands and air
cruises are major emerging trends for them.
Areas like adventure tourism, shopping, wellness, beach & resort, medical, cruise
etc, also had the potential to be integrated into Incredible India campaign.
E-commerce:
Today 50% of the travel arrangements in the World are transacted on the net and it
is growing. It is believed that about 17% of the holiday business is also transacted
on the net. The success of Expedia.com and Travelvelocity.com etc. are good
examples
Innovation:

Atithi Devo Bhave & Priyadarshni like initiatives should be taken to increase
awareness among host population.
Tourist-Police:
Retired defense personals can be employed as tourist-police.
