Question 1 is compulsory. Attempt any two part from question 2 to question 6.
1.
a) Suppose the moment generating function of a random variable X is given by
. What is P { X = 0 } ?
b) A bowl contains 10 chips, of which 8 are marked $2 each and 2 are marked $5
each. Let the person choose, at random and without replacement, 3 chips from
this bowl. If the person is to receive the sum of the resulting amounts, find his
expectation.
c)
i. Explain why there can be no random variable for which M(t) =t/(1-t).
ii. Find the mgf of
d) Given the mgf
find the mgf of the random variable
, and use it to determine the mean and the variance of Z.
e) If E(X) =10 and = 3, can X have a negative binomial distribution.

a) In a distribution exactly normal, 10.03% of the items are under 25Kg weight
and 89.97% of the items are under 70 Kg weight. What are the mean and
standard deviation of the distribution?
b) Three fair coins are tossed. Let X denote the number of heads on the first two
coins, and let Y denote the number of tails on the last two coins.
i. Find the joint distribution of X and Y.
ii. Find the conditional distribution of Y given that X = 1.
iii. Find Cov(X, Y).
