Google Earth, Google Maps and

how to use them

Google Maps
Google Maps is a great tool that can be used to see risk locations, their
surrounding area, buildings and how the location has changed over time.

Street View and Aerial View

Street view gives you the ability to see the building up close and
walk around the location to check the condition of the
location, the parking lot/walkways or for any hazards.

Aerial view allows you to view the entire surrounding location. You can zoom in and out as needed.
At this view you are also able to view the roof and any rooftop units. Google Maps also now labels
surrounding locations,, so you are able to see what other types of businesses are around the risk
location.

Additional Views in Google Maps

This is a zoomed in view of a roof. At this view you are able to
really see the condition as well as the number of roof top units.

This is a 3D view. This is accomplished by hitting the Tilt View button twice.
The entire surrounding area is now visible. Terrain can also been seen,
such as the mountains in the distance.

A newer feature in Google Maps

A newer feature within Google Maps that some may not know about is that at some locations,
you are actually able to inside the buildings. The upper right photo show the notification you will
see when you are able to go inside a location. Simply click on its front door and you will be taken inside and can navigate around just as you do in street view.
This is helpful to find things such as the painters tape over the smoke detectors in this hallway.

Google Earth
Google Earth is a great tool that
can be used in conjunction with
Google Maps or when you need
different types of information
regarding a location that Google
Maps can not provide . Some
functions include Terrorism
Grids, Stay Dry and Hail Bands.

This icon should be located on your desktop. Most additional overlays,

including Stay Dry, Hail Bands and Terrorism, have links available in
iBank.

Hail Bands
This is the general overview of the US when no specific
location is selected

This is a location within hail band 5. When you hover over the location,
it will show the county, state and band, as well as the SC Referral
person and the MM referral person.

Terrorism
Once Top Terrorism Grids is chosen from the left, the below key
will appear showing the color meanings for locations.

This is an overview of Boston. Any location that falls into the

categories in the key will be highlighted by the corresponding color.

Stay Dry

Stay Dry is used in conjunction with Risk

Meters to see where a risk location falls
within various flood zones. The key to the
right describes each color label and its
100 year flood history. Each location can
be measured to distance to a flood zone
using the Ruler tool located on the tool
bar in Google Earth. When selected, the
box above appears. You are then able to
place the starting marker on your location
and measure the distance to the zone. It
will create a yellow line, like in the photo
and will show the feet to the zone.

Clear Space

In addition to measuring the distance to flood zones, the ruler tool can also be used to measure the distance between buildings to
determine whether or not they fall into clear space guidelines. The same placement icon will appear when the ruler is chosen, along with
the ruler box. Place the icon on one building and click again on the building you wish to measure.

are you able to see it from an aerial view, but you are also able to see how it
stands next to surrounding buildings.

Gallery and the 360 Cities

When you choose Gallery from the Layers, some places will have 360 in a
red dot. This means there is a 360 degree tour of the location available.

Similar to in Google Maps when you are able to go inside some locations.
Clicking on the photo that appears in the 360, you are able to have panoramic
views of the location.

14

Places
Using this layer you are able to see what type and how
many other businesses are around your location.

For even deeper digging or for location confirmation, simply click on the
icon for your location for the address, photos and website (if available)

15

There are many many other layers offered in Google Earth, not
many we would use for underwriting reasons, but you are able
to explore the location to see traffic, weather, the ocean, places
that have been mentioned in National Geographic, and many
other things. You can also fly to the Moon or to Mars, and see
the constellations and other celestial bodies.
