MASTERS OF ARTS IN GENDER STUDIES

he main purpose of the Master of Arts in Gender


programme is to produce scholars with quality
graduate qualifications to address issues of gender
disparity, gender discrimination, and gender
violence. The programme will develop in learners
the academic ability and the competence to apply the
acquired theories, research skills, and knowledge to
critically analyze issues of gender and be in a position
to come up with solutions on how to remove gender
differences and inequality.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAMME

he programme objectives are to demonstrate


deeper knowledge on gender issues, undertake
tasks and carry out women and gender researches and
writing, communicating and presenting reports on
gender issues. Also to exhibit awareness of the context
and extent in which and to which gender disparities
operate and enhance capacities in applying critical
and analytical skills in conceptualizing the issues of
women and gender.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

andidates for the Master of Arts in Gender Studies


will be admitted on the basis of the University
regulations, which govern admission process (See
Open Universitys prospectus for more details). In
addition to the general university entry specifications,
applicants to the MA in Gender Studies programme
will be required to have a first degree with a minimum
GPA of 2.7.Applicants with advanced diploma from
a recognized institution of higher learning with a B+
grade can also qualify for admission. In exceptional
cases where one has experience of 5 yrs a lower GPA
may be acceptable accompanied with a 2 page written
statement detailing prior experience or engagement
with gender related activities.

DURATION

he course shall be completed in a period of 18


months for either the evening or executive mode.

ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS

tudents are assessed in each course by a


combination of course work, final examination and
dissertation. The course work component comprise
of class participation (5%), presentation (15%),
Analytical Individual Term Paper (30%) and Final
formal examination (50%) . The formal examinations
allow sufficient assessment and feedback to maintain
intellectual rigor and provide opportunity for
individual improvement. Dissertation is assessed
independently with the research methodology and
carries 100%. The minimum pass mark is 50% for each
course and dissertation. Students who fail in some
courses will be given a chance to supplement and if
failed in supplementary, then they will be given a
chance to repeat the course at an additional fee.

PROGRAMME CONTENT

he programme consists of initial 10 core units, one


(1) elective course which carry a weight of two (2)
units each and Research methodology course with an
academic dissertation (also core) which carries 6 units
to make a total of 18 units to complete the programme.
Core units provide a foundation of knowledge
and understanding. Electives units allow in-depth
study and reflection and provide a student with an
opportunity to enhance and deepen knowledge
and skills in areas of particular interest, and which
are relevant to future career. The electives we offer
vary depending on current faculty research agenda
and relevance to Gender Studies in contemporary
situations.

PROGRAMME DELIVERY

The programme will be delivered in two modes,


namely Evening and Executive.
The Evening Mode
t the moment this mode will be held at Kinondoni
Regional Centre in Dar es Salaam. This is a full
time face to face delivery and students will attend
lectures from 17.00 to 20.00 hours for four days.
Assessment component includes presentation in
class and class participation, a term paper and a final
examination.

After completion of all courses the students will be


taken through the research methodology course in a
face to face session where they will come up with the
research proposal.
They will be assigned a supervisor for the dissertation
and finalize the research and produce the final
dissertation for examination.

The Moodle Hybrid Mode


ll course content will be uploaded in the moodle
platform where students can read content of the
course. Students are supposed to interact with their
lecturer and among themselves to exchange ideas and
learn from each other. Lecturer will visit zonal centres
where students can meet them face to face for further
clarifications.

There will be a two months break between modules.


Assessment will include Term Paper, Moodle Platform
participation and final examination.
Research Methodology course will be taught
immediately after doing the final examinations
Students will be assigned a supervisor for the
dissertation and finalize the research and produce the
final dissertation for examination.

FEES STRUCTURE FOR MAGS PROGRAMME

he following table gives the fees structure for the


the programme of study. It covers Tanzanian,
EAC/SADC and foreign students. The fee structure
os charged at 500,000 per course. Kindly note, the
programme has six courses offered in two semesters;
three courses are offered at each semester, including
elective or area of specialization course. For Tanzanians
in the Evening/ Executive modes, fees will be paid in
MA Social Work Account No. 01J1014596800, CRDB,
KIJITONYAMA BRANCH, Dar es Salaam.
