OPTION B: CONSERVATION TASKS

There this child called Julian and if four years old and He has and older sister who just
turned eight. I know his parent Jojo and crystal at church and see them at church retreat, So when
I asked his parents if I could do some concrete task with him and his older sister. They told me
that I could and they seemed very confident that both Julian an his sister would do well on these
conservation task that I have conducted for them According to his parents and hes developing
quite fast ever since he was an infant. So they invited to their house after church while they were
making lunch at there house. So i made up three conservation talks. But I made sure that Julian
sister wasnt in the same room at the time that Julian was doing the observation. First I pulled out
two cups of water. One was short and fat, and the other was thin and tall both can hold the same
amount of water. Apparently Julian didnt figure that out as I asked which one had more water he
said the tall one and I asked him why? He said because it was taller so the water is taller than
the short glass. So I asked him you dont think there the same?. And again he replied No
because that water is taller , duh. So I did the second one ,which was the pennies. I laid two
rows of six pennies out in front of Julian. The first row of pennies were spreaded two finger
widths across and the second had little distance between them. I had him decide which one had
more pennies, and he instantly replied the first row. And I asked him why? He said because
theres more pennies. So I hinted to him do you want to try and count them ? and he did , he
counted six on both rows. I asked him the question again and he still picked the first row. Which
kind of reminded when I did this with my niece when she was around three or four back when I

was in high school and she choose the same thing for the same reason which I thought was
interesting. For the third I was originally going to do sticks like it had in the book but I forgot to
bring to their house so I used two of my shoelaces. So I had them parallel and move one string
closer to the other side . So I asked Julian which string is longer and he sad the first one ( the
string that was more on the side). And he said because its more that way then that string . So
after I was done doing the conservation with Julian I went to his older sister room and I did the
conservation with her there. So for the first one which was the water cups , I asked her which cup
had more water and she said the tall one. And then I asked you dont think there the same and she
replied no . So I told how about we pour the water in to the short glass again. So then I asked
again and she replied that both are the same. Hopefully she was saying that because understood
not because I was hinting it. So then I we did the pennies and I laid them out the same as I did
wither Brother Julian. But before she answered she counted them and said that theyre both the
same. Then we did the last one of the strings and laid them out the same ways as before . So
when I asked which one is longer? First she said arent those your shoe lace why did you take
them off?. And I told her because I want to know if you there their the same. So graves the one
the top and lines it up with the bottom and said there both the same and that I can put my
shoelaces back on. So I when I did the conservation with Julian it reminded when I did this with
my niece a few years back and I think he answered them the same as she did so it made realize
that children around there age preoperational intelligence so they cant quite make sense of that
much thins logically how ever Julian sister who older than him has a more cognitive
development . Also a thing that interesting and funny is that they both have the same funny
attitude when they did the conservation but they just had different answers.
