Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards

fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK
From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.
You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.
You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.
From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order
to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.
Sourcing
Crew
Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England
http://www.creativeengland.co.uk/index.php/portfolio/locationproduction-support/
Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
Facility
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/
can be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and
sound engineer.
Materials
Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets
or studio Props departments
Transport
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London
http://www.tfl.gov.uk, National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk,
hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per
person.

Facility hire

Importance
Equipment: was very important in the sense of needing a fully
charged camera, as we were shooting on location having charged
camera batteries at the ready are a necessity as we are working to
deadlines and don't have time to wait for things to charge. Props
were very important as my film was set in the year2000 so being
careful with the setting, to not have any modern day technology in
shot.
Transport: wasn't really an issuer or a big part of my production as
the location we used was very local and easy to get to as it was my
friend's house.
Talent: I had 3 actors and 4 characters I played 2 of them but one of
the roles my faced was covered so it worked out.
Materials: Prop wise I used an old style phone to represent the year
2000 time period.
Facility hire: I didn't need to hire an felicity I just had to arrange a
date with my friend in which I could film at her house.
None of these cost me any money as I had previously bought the
camera and didn't not need to buy it strictly for this project, the
phone prop that was used was a phone that my friend had
previously owned.
Financing: Financing is important as It is important to distribude the
budgeted money on each of the things that need hiring suitably.
A bigger the budget the higher the quality of the production, by
having more money you can buy more equipment to work on the
quality of the production, as I had a small budget for my production
the quality is medicore.

Time:

Deadlines
Availability of equipment
Availability of personnel (size
of team; roles)

Importance
Deadlines: were very important as we had loss of little parts to this
project so each thing had to be done by a certain time or they'd
overlap and the work would start to pile up.
Availability of equipment: I had no issues with this as the only thing I
really needed was a camera which I already owned, but if I didn't I
would have needed to hire a camera.

Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production equipment
facility houses

Importance
Production equipment: was very important as there would be no
production with out any equipment (a camera) The film was set and
its surrounding are also a big part of production epuipment as it
gives the film its genre. Lighting equipment is also a big part of film
production as the way a shot is lit can really change the veiwers
perspective of a shot. Soft boxes may been needed to brighten a
shot or if a shot needs to be darker light defusers can be used to
make the shot dimmer.
Filming outside can really effect the films audio quality due to wind
and natural life can Itterput the audio, to prvent/help this you can
use microphones to intensify the sound of the actors voice. This will
also be helpful to highlight noise that is nessecary so it will highlight
the actors voice rather than background noise however it will not

completely fix the issue.

Materials:

Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script (upload an example)
Interviews
Costumes

Importance
It is important to have original material because there may be
issues with copyright and also it is important to create original
content
Archive material would be used to keep track of any records needed
to film.
Photo-library materials are important as they give producers acess
to quick content without having to go out and create it themselves,
the same with sound footage if sound effect is needed and the
creators dont have time to create one themsevles they can used
one from a sound library.
Internet is important if research needs doing, or to get photo library
materials of sound library materials.
A script is important as it gives the actors directions as to what
theyre doing and saying, it is a way for the production to run
smoothly.
Here is an example of a script:

didnt even agree to.
MAX WOOLFENDEN

Costumes are important is they give producers the opportunity to
create a persona through what the character is wearing.

Recces (Upload an example)

Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost,
weather

Importance
It is important to have a loation relevant to your story line other
wise your story may not make sense. The surroundings need to be
relevant to the characters and their perona. If you are filming a
teenage girl in a bed room that likes one direction you need to have
a bedroom that will have conventional links to that.
The story line must be based around relatistic locations, if you have
a low budget you can't pitch your idea to be in australia it has to be
realistic to youre accesabilits.
Here is an example of a location reccee that I have made:

Weather is also important as if the weather is bad in your chosen

location you may have to reschedule the date of filming as the
scene wouldn't work and the equiptment could be damaged. It's
better to plan ahead when filming regarding the weather as if you
are working to a deadline

Codes of
practice and
regulation:

Location permissions
Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
It is very imporatant to have permission to use locations as you may
be prosecusted for trespassing. So you must book/hire
privatelocations that you are wanting to use.
It Is very important to follow the copyright laws or the content that
you have made will be taken down for wherever It is you plan to
broadcast it and you will most likely be fined.
Health and safety Is important as it is important to ensure that each
person on the set are fufilled with their entitlement to their saftey.
It Is important that the film set has no kind of saftey hazards that
put any of the cast oor crew in danger.
Insurance Is important as If something were to go wrong with saftey
they have ensurance to pay for the damage/treat to the indured
person on the NHS.

The below only requires you to discuss the importance

(Choose the one that relate to your production only)
Regulatory
Ofcom
bodies:

Press Complaints Commission

(PCC) Advertising Standards
Authority (ASA)
Pan European Game
Information (PEGI)
Entertainment Software Rating
Board (ESRB)
British Board of Film
Classification (BBFC)

Importance
Ofcom is important when producing media that you make sure that
everything the film you make does dollows the guidelines of ofcom
as they are the regualtor of the content put on to tv.
ASA make sure that no media that is broadcasted is
offensive/discriminative in anyway.
This important as TV companies will want to hold a reputation so
they don't want to have people complaining at them for being
descrimnativie or biased in anyway.
Brirish board of film classification censor films to inform the viewer
what the content contains.
For exmaple a movie like Step Brothers Is a 15 because It contains a
lot of swearing and sexual references, if there was no warning on
the film It would give minors the potential to be offeneded/ scared.
It would also not be good for the parents as they wont want their
children to be exposed to that kind of media.
Trade unions:

Producers Alliance for Cinema

and Television (PACT),
National Union of Journalists
(NUJ)
Broadcasting Entertainment
Cinematograph and Theatre
Union (BECTU)

Importance
The BECTU is the UK's media and entertainment trade union, the
aim of the company is to Improve the pay given to those who work
in the media Industry.

Trade
associations:

Importance

Entertainment and Leisure

Software Publishers
Association (ELSPA)
British Interactive Media
Association (BIMA)

The entertainment and leisure software pulishers association

(ELSPA) Is important because they are responsible for providing
sales charts for computer games that are sold around the UK.
The is to make sure that creators rewarded for their content.
BIMA are important as they supprot the british digital industry.
