Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards

fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK
From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.
You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.
You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.
From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.
For example

Sourcing

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order
to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.
Sourcing
Crew
Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England
http://www.creativeengland.co.uk/index.php/portfolio/locationproduction-support/
Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
Facility
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/ can
be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and sound
engineer.
Materials
Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets or
studio Props departments
Transport
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London
http://www.tfl.gov.uk, National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk,
hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per
person.

complete. Either ay, a table like the one below needs to be used.
Finance:

Equipment
Transport
Talent
Crew

Facility hire

Importance
It is very important to have a finance for a production because you
need to be able to afford everything needed for that productions.
Having the right equipment is Important because we want to make
sure that well be able to do everything needed and to do that you
need the correct equipment and to make sure that equipment is
good and safe to use. If you do not hire equipment that is good
quality, yes you will be saving money because it will be cheap but
this will affect the quality of your whole production. You will have to
spend a lot of money if you want your final production to be good.
Also if the equipment is very cheap there will be a chance
something will go wrong with it. This means you will be spending
more money to fix it. Transport is also very important because if one
of your crew members doesnt live close to where you're filming you
have to rely on transport to get him there. If you're filming a
production that requires talent (for example a stuntman) you going
to have to find someone who can do those stunts therefore having
talent is really important. you also have to make sure that if you rely
on public transport, be certain that it isnt delayed or cancelled and
that they will definitely be able to make it to where they need to be
on time. Having the right crew is also really important because you
need to have people who can do all the specific jobs needed to
create the production. If the production is set somewhere specific
like a pub, you are going to have to hire out a pub to film there so it
is important that you have money to hire this.

Time:

Deadlines
Availability of equipment
Availability of personnel (size
of team; roles)

Importance
Most productions have a deadline so it is important that you got all
the filming done in time for the deadline because if you miss a
deadline then you will have to spend time to reschedule everything
to get it done as soon as possible. It is important that all the
equipment you require is available to use by the time it comes to
film. If the equipment isnt available then you wont be able to film
your production. You're going to need some personnel who are
suitable for each roll needed for the production. So that is very
important that they are all available on each day you need to film
and if they're not you will have to find someone else that can do
that role on that specific day.

Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production equipment
facility houses

Importance
It is very important that you have production equipment because
without it you wont be able to film the actual production. Therefore
having the equipment for the production is one of the most
important things. You also need to make sure that you hire the
actors the same time you hire the facility because If you hire them
different times/days you wont get your production done and youll
still have to pay them for hiring them. You will lose a lot money by
doing this and will be behind on filming your production.

Materials:

Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script (upload an example)
Interviews
Costumes

Importance
It is important to have original material because you want the
production to be unique therefore you dont want to use something
that everybody else has used
Archive material would be used because they might want to use
that footage in the future so they will save it for whenever they
need it
Photo-library materials are good to have because if youre
Interviewing someone you can buy photos related to the subject and
display them with the audio of the Interview. This is good if you're
talking about someone or something you cant get footage of
anymore. For example if I was talking about Tupac, you cannot get
footage of him because he Is dead so you would buy footage/photos
of him to display during the interview.
This is the same for sound library materials, you can buy audio to
put In your presentation if it Is hard to acquire audio. they are useful
to have because if you have footage but the sound isnt very
good/isnt needed you can use some sound library materials over
the footage for the viewers to listen to.
Audio Is good to have because you can keep the viewers engaged
with what they are listening to and what is going on in the video

VO: Dance isnt just a childhood hobby, it is part of a big culture

known as Hip Hop
Starting in the early 1970s hip hop dance has changed massively from
what it was (clip of dancing back in the day) then to what it is now
(clip of dancing nowdays)
It was the late 1960s in New York City. Young, energetic people
with a natural instinct of movement took their ability to the streets
of New York.
These moves were inspired by complex beats and down to earth
movements from the style of African dancing. The combination of this
and the music formed hip hop dance as a whole. And this style in
particular is called Breakin.
Breakin is a very competitive style. Male dancers of this style are
called B-Boys and females are called B-Girls
An interesting fact:
This style was first used by gang members to gain territories in the
city. Instead of them fighting they would have a dance battle and
take out their anger through dance.
This style grew massively over the years. To do this style you have
to know the 5 main things to do when you dance. It consists of top
rocks, go downs, foot/floor work, power moves and freezes.
Some people do stereotype hip hop dance and the people involved in
it. The media has stereotyped some styles like breakin into gangster
and crime related themes. You can see this in movies such as Step Up
1 and Step Up 2 show the negative sides you get from hip hop when
someone ends up dying. Hip hop dance today is nothing like that. Hip
hop dancer battle each other but it is purely dance, no violence is
involved. Youre only aggressive because of the energy youre letting
out when youre dancing. Hip Hop as a whole is a culture. It brings
people together instead of driving them away.

Shane: when it comes to dance battles they work by having multiple

rounds. For each round a dancer has a set. A set is a not too long
sequence of a dancers best movements to impress the judges.
VO: When the style of Breakin was created it wasnt as exciting then
as it is now because back then there was not as many dance movements
created then. This meant that they would have short sets and were
likely to repeat their moves again.
The more it increased in popularity the more moves were created.
VO: But breakin wasnt the only hip hop dance style created around
the same time. Over on the West Coast of America a man called
Boogaloo Sam was a very important influence in the evolution of hip
hop dance. He had a gift for music and movement which was very
different to the style created on the East Coast in New York. This
grew into the style of poppin and he became the founder of the dance
group Electric Boogaloo
To be able to do the basic pop all you have to do is to
hold your
arm up and quickly tense your muscles in your arm.
Whilst popping was gaining more and more popularity a man called Don
Campbell tried to fit in with all the poppers but instead of popping
he paused. The poppers didnt like how he was doing it and didnt
support him. He didnt let this bother him. When he was dancing
occasionally he would go to high five someone, no one would high five
him so he would high five himself instead. He went on to create the
style locking. He then went on to create the very well-known dance
group The Lockers.
The style of locking focuses mainly on the pauses you make between

each movement
Hip Hop dance influenced many people from all over the world to have
a career in dance. I am at Swindon Dance Academy. I have been going
here for 5 years now and I am going to see how hip hop dance has
influenced them
Peoples responses of the question

The internet is also useful to use because on a topic you're doing it

is easy to find background information about it so you'll be able to
present your production more accurately and in greater detail

Original material is filmed by the director but archive footage for
productions can be found on the internet

Locations:

Recces (Upload an example)

Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost, weather

Importance
Recces are important because you need to find a place that relates
to your production and you need to make sure it is suitable. you
need to be aware of the limitations because you wont be able to do
the production if your crew members are too far away or if the
weather is too bad

Codes of
practice and
regulation:

Location permissions
Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
You need to make sure you are allowed to film where you want to
film. therefore you need to ask permission to film there and get a
clearance, this is important because if you dont you can get In
serious trouble with the law. You need to make sure where your
filming isn't dangerous so you need to carry out health and safety
tests to make sure its suitable to film In or something really bad
could happen if it isnt checked. you should make sure your crew
members have health insurance so if something goes wrong or an
accident happens it would all be covered.
