Tuesday 19th March 2019 – Documentary (How has auto-tune effected the music industry?)

Creative Media production and technology (TV and Film)

Rationale:

Throughout this course I have learned about many areas of creative media production such as Documentaries which developed my filming skills through
gaining many complex shots. This unit also taught me the importance of communication within a crew as well how much this benefits a production as well a
individuals overall personal skills. Unit 3 where I created a short film about anxiety allowed me to develop my practical skills a lot when filming and editing.
An example of me developing my filming skills was during production as I learned many complex angles and shots that allowed me to tell a strong,
meaningful story. This allowed me to develop my storytelling skills through the use of camera skills. The editing process within this unit was my chosen
specialism as it is a very strong strength of mine, I developed my knowledge within this unit through learning many exciting and beneficial editing
techniques on Premier Pro CC such as cut to the beat, colour correction and action cuts. These allow me to tell a story and give a production a certain tone
to it for example mental health would be more darker and cold as this is an emotional taboo whereas the effect of auto tune within the music industry
would be more brighter as this is a lighter topic. This editing process has allowed me to develop personal skills such as initiative and my overall creativity
when creating a production. These skills have been further developed in later units such as 5 where I learned how to use sound appropriately and how to
alter this to tell a story, this will be beneficial for me as audio will be vital within a documentary, when interviewees are being interviewed as this will allow
listeners to hear them more effectively. We have chosen to create a documentary for our final major project as this allows us to close off the year with a
passionate, interesting and creative display of a subject which we admire and understand strongly as a group. We have chosen this topic (How has auto-
tune effected the music industry?) as music is very strong interest within any culture and develops a huge amount each year in both positive and negative
ways, one of which is auto-tune. This audio technique allows music creators to manipulate their voice to either equalise their tone our or to make them
seem much better than they actually are. An example of a negative result of this is that people pay to hundreds for concerts or festivals to see an artist who
actually is not as good as they appear online, auto tune is the reason for this. I am passionate about music as well as this sub topic within the music industry
as I personally feel this has made it more difficult for us as the listeners to find good music with strong meaning and actual talent. This is because auto tune
has enabled anyone with a computer and a microphone to create music and manipulate their voice to sound music different from the reality, resulting with
an increase of artists that actually are not that good. This course has benefited my overall knowledge for the media industry a huge amount as I have
learning skills that benefit me professionally and personally for the rest of my life. This is because I have learned practical skills such as editing which have
developed massively as I have learned new techniques such as colour correction which sets a tone to a production as well as other techniques that have
allowed me to create breath-taking effects such as the ghost effect and strobe effect and other such as cut to the beat ,learned in unit 3 and developed
further in unit 6 which has allowed me to create a appropriate flow within music videos, adverts and music videos. This course has made me incredible
optimistic and confident within my future as editing is my biggest passion which I have been doing since I was in year 7 when I used to create short films
with my friends. By learning and developing this skill has made my dream come closer to reality and I am very excited for this final major project as I am
strongly looking forward to seeing all my knowledge and experience and further more my passion to come together within this documentary.
Project concept:

The aim of our overall production (documentary) is to educate and inform viewers on a new topic that they don’t have a strong knowledge about, or if they
know about this, this production will allow them to have a more in depth visual image of this, this topic will be relevant to ensure the subject of the
documentary has a strong meaning that viewers can relate too. An example of this is How has auto tune effected the music industry? . This topic is a strong
interest to every age group as this is heard every day in the car or on TV. This is one of the biggest and still growing industries in the world and has plenty of
genres to investigate this question on. This documentary would be most relevant to the youth as the genres covered such as rap and rock are strongly
listened to and furthermore we can put these genres into a comparison to show this. To support this idea we have reliable contacts that could explain and
give their opinion to ensure this documentary is a trustworthy source. To create a documentary based production I will need the following resources such
as achieve footage to give viewers a short and beneficial introduction which conveys the subject to viewers instantly as this will allow us to create a flow
within our production.

Other resources needed are locations that relate to the topic, which will make our documentary seem more professional and reliable to viewers this will be
thought of by me and Ben as a team throughout prior to pre-production when we create our location recces.

We will also need equipment such as tripods to ensure interviews are steady as well as to a conventional documentary professional standard, I have one of
these so this will benefit our production massively as it will allow me and Ben to have access to this whenever this is needed as oppose to having to hire this
out with a strict return date which is highly understandable as I believe this could be an stressful for the owners of the equipment. I also personally believe
that if that we should bring a spare camera as well as my one. This is useful as me and Ben are working as a team so he will have this. By having two
cameras this will ensure that we have a back-up camera in case for example one broke as well as this allowing us to gain multiple perspectives in a
interview, by having two cameras will ensure more camera shots, angles and footage which benefits mine and Bens editing experience as well as the
viewers experience when watching as more angle will allow us to convey professionalism and creativity as this will keep the viewers interest. We will also
need lighting equipment to ensure interviews are shot to a professional standard as well as conveying the closeness the viewer has to the interviewees as if
they are talking to the, this will be hired out from college which we will have to ensure is back on time as planned/agreed. I will need interviewees that
relate to the topic which is music. This means me and Ben will have to use our contact network of friends and family in order to gain trustworthy, reliable
and relevant interviewees within the music industry that can give us beneficial information for our production as well as our audience, when talking to crew
and interviewees this will be done respectively, calmly with a high amount of understanding and consideration through communicating with them in order
to help them understand our documentaries purpose and furthermore to make them feel confident, motivated and ready as this will benefit our overall end
product.
Evaluation:

My work will be evaluated by doing the following things to ensure I am getting reliable as well as constructive feedback for our choice of production. I will
do this by taking the following steps and applying this to my current work ethic. I will record all process that has been made each by using notes on I phone.
This will show the date of when this was done as well what tasks need to be completed to ensure I show strong evidence of process being made. I will
reflect on my overall project by sending out a quick and simple survey monkey asking question about e.g. camera angles and how these were used and
furthermore if this worked well. This will allow us to gain a much better understanding of our overall production and how this was executed, this will allow
me to gain a greater understanding of my process. I will record decision making within the editing process by taking a large amount of screen shots
throughout, showing my progress throughout this process as well as how this was done, why and furthermore how I surpassed issues that arose, this will
also be done in the filming process to show how we overcame issues whilst filming and furthermore us on location, what we’re doing, where we are, why
we are doing this and what this allowed us to do and how this benefits our productions development.

For this production I have chosen to work with Ben. I believe this is a beneficial choice for use both as we have the same work ethic/rate that will allow us
to progress well throughout this final major project (FMP) as well as socially getting along well and furthermore working together really well to produce
productions such as an advertisement for Iceland mince pies, a music video for Nikki by Logic and lastly a documentary on the youths fashion. I personally
feel we are both understanding to each other as well as considerate when sharing idea and furthermore we respect each other which allows us to
communicate well in order to produce amazing productions that meet deadlines on time conveying a professional and mature worth ethic to our superiors.
