Britains Affronted Youth Documentary

Evaluation
Our group originated with me Charlie and Connor who have worked
together before in the Music Video and in the Documentary practise.
When it came to the start of making the documentary Lucas joined us as
we need 4 people and he asked to join us. After a few days we had Ryan
moved into our group, we originally allocated him to Location finder but
he was soon moved out of our group during our final research lesson. We
adapted to having him not in our group by re-allocating roles and gaining
more of our own research. Our group choice was solid and we managed to
work efficiently as a team, with a few minor slip ups.
To talk about an allegation such as naming our generation the Cotton
Wool Generation we needed to gain factual evidence of this happening
and the reasons for this. We also needed to find where people thought it
was coming from so that we could research how these sources are
heightened in 2017. The research in our project was key because we need
factual evidence to make our Documentary more professional and prove
our point. Some research we recovered stated that 57% of people thought
that the term cracker was offensive, this intrigued me to find people who
would find people who would find this stuff offensive. We even added a
section in our final piece using our research to show one of the points we
had researched about racial and sexist hate speech from social media,
and how this affects our documentaries main point of being called the
Cotton Wool Generation.
We had to create a Documentary that links to todays youth. Once we
were told about this we started with the idea of making a Documentary
about people getting offended. We didnt really think of anything else as
we were all eager to have a go at this style of Documentary. Once we had
our idea we went straight into research and our idea slowly changed from
being offended to the allegation of our generation being the most
offended generation. We thought this would be the perfect idea to base
our documentary on. Once we had gained our research we decided that
we would interview people we know who can get easily offended. We
decided to get Andre and Annabel who were two willing candidates to help
us get their opinions on certain questions what may be a little offensive
but will get a good reaction out of them.
The feedback given to us helped us massively, as we changed a lot of
errors in our piece that we didnt even notice. We got rid of the Presenter
asking the questions that was a huge part of our piece before the
feedback, this shortened our piece so that we could add more footage and
facts and it also made it look a lot cleaner. The feedback also helped show
us where we could cut some pieces of un-needed speech out. With this we
also covered up the jump cuts from footage where we cut out parts of
speech. Overall the feedback helped us make our Documentary look more
professional and clean.
The skills I have learned from this documentary is;
1. FRAMING AND SPACING A SHOT: In the documentary we use the rule
pf the thirds. This is used so that it looks more professional and so
you can add any text or images in the free space, it also shows the
direction he is looking. We also used the 180 degrees rule what has
made me know that camera spacing is key and to make it look good
is difficult depending on the amount of space and the angle of the
cameras. I have learned to effectively angle camera shots to look
good and be in frame.
2. BASIC PREMIERE PRO EDITING: the documentary has taught me how
to find basic tools in premiere pro as I have always used a different
editing software and I am now getting used to premiere pro.
3. HOW TO TRANSITION TO B-ROLL OR ARCHIVE FOOTAGE: In this
documentary I have been taught how to successfully add in B-Roll
into my documentary to make it look better and not bore the
audience when watching. I have also been able to use these to
successfully cover jump cuts and messy footage by using relevant
B-Roll/ Archive footage.
4. LOCATION RELATING TO A VIDEO: This documentary has taught me
that location plays a large part in videos and how difficult it can be
to go to certain places without permits. This has taught me to
efficiently pre-book locations and try to find relevant locations.
5. GETTING PEOPLE WHO WILL MAKE THE FILM GREAT: Getting
someone who suits the part to play in a film or documentary is
harder than I thought. With certain things you cant just get a
random person, you need to find someone who links to the
situation/problem who you can also get an entertaining opinion
from.
6. MUSIC CHOICE LINKING TO THE THEME: I have learned how to get
certain genres/ artists who make music that relates to our theme.
This make the emotion from the piece more effective and makes it
look and sound very professional. If you choose the wrong choice of
the music it could ruin the whole documentary.

The skills that I will use to help my next production is the precise
planning, by this I mean that I would like to find the best places to
shoot at, that links to my production and its theme. I would like to have
suitable location recces to benefit my coursework and improve my
standard of work, I would also like to have a plethora of research to
consolidate my grade, but to improve this from previous productions, I
will evaluate the research to further my grade. I would also like to keep
the same dynamic group work as we work productively off of each
other and create a good piece together, in the next task I will edit on
my own and make sure that the shots line up perfectly.

The secondary research helped me in my production as it manipulated

my questions and the way I asked these certain questions. It also
helped me to be more confident when asking the questions what
improved my role in the piece. This will help me in the future as I know
that good research will benefit my acting and other in my groups acting
as it will be spoken with confidence of knowledge we have gained. The
primary research also helped us out as we had gained some of our own
knowledge prior to us filming what could either show a contrast in
opinions or a similarity what could direct our documentary into a new
light. This will help us in the future as primary research is necessary to
see if other who you personally ask has different opinions. Primary and
Secondary research is key when it comes to productions and it vital to
know how to use it properly to benefit your cause
