Conclusion:
I gathered data from a total of 85 people but unfortunately, 90.6% of
them were ages 18-35 years. I did not receive any data from anyone in the
60+ category. Even though I did not get data from that group I did get strong
data from the remaining groups. The majority of my participants were from
age 18-35 and were not religious. Most of them felt that they had strong
morals and it was split rather evenly between male and female participants.
This gave me a pretty detailed analysis of how 18-35 year olds felt regarding
profanity Regarding the question that states, how frequent do you use
profanity, there was a pretty even split among occasionally, frequently,
and very frequently. This indicated that the majority of 18-35 year olds use
profanity in their life. The majority of my participants said they had strong
morals so I can infer that morals dont have a very strong impact on the use
of profanity for younger people. More than half of my participants felt that
the word cunt was an inappropriate word to use in conversation with their
age group. This is a reasonable answer because the word cunt is
considered one of the most profane words used. Almost half believed that all
the choices were appropriate to use within their own age groups. 33 people
said that the most profane word they used was fuck. This seems like a very

reasonable answer because it seems that the word fuck has been adopted
as a normal part of conversation in society. People accept it as a noun, verb,
and adjective. It is used in so many different ways to describe many different
events. The majority of my participants felt that from 18-60+ years it was
okay to use profanity. Only 42 people thought that is was appropriate to use
profanity from age 13-60+ years. The word cunt was highest ranked for an
inappropriate word to be used on public television. The majority of my
participants had been using profanity for more than 5 years. Now since most
of my participants were 18-35 years old, this means that some participants
started using profanity as early as 13 years old. This is a rather shocking find
considering only 1 participant was age 1-12 years old. My participants felt
that is was appropriate to use profanity in social groups and in recreational
settings but professional and academic settings were inappropriate. I found
this particularly interesting because in a college setting profanity is used
absolutely everywhere. Students use it, professors use it and everyone in
between.
