THE SURVEY
We had a lot of assignments for the E-skills
course, in one the group tasks we had to create
a survey on whatever site or program we
preferred on a topic of our choosing but it also
had to be related to the IBM program at
Artevelde University College. The survey had to
consist out of 15 questions and we needed to
gather data from at least 30 different people of
our class.
We decided to do our research on the seminars
organized by Artevelde hence the title of our
survey. The seminars organized by Artevelde
were somehow compulsory (meaning you had to
attend four (at least) organized by Artevelde and one not organized by Artevelde) and
the seminars were mostly the things people talked about in the IBM program, therefor
we decided to investigate this further to see what people liked/disliked about the entire
compulsory assignment of attending seminars. For our survey we used Google Forms
since weve worked with it before, its trustworthy, its free and easily convertible to a
spreadsheet in both google spreadsheets as in Microsoft Office Excel.
What made the assignment extremely interesting was that we also had a course called:
Market Research for which we had to learn how to make surveys and what questions
we had to ask to become a relevant outcome and what we had to avoid.

CRITERIA USED
In our survey we started off with some basic questions to divide our group into
categories to make it easier to divide them later on into categories. After that we focused
more on asking more in depth questions such as open, multiple choice and score based
questions.
Basic criteria questions:
-

Gender?
Are you an international student?
Age category?

More in-depth questions:

-

Have you already attended a seminar organized by Artevelde?

How many seminars did you already attend?
Did you already attend a seminar not organized by Artevelde?
Were you satisfied with the content of the seminars organized by Artevelde?
If you answered no on previous question please elaborate on what you want to see
improved.
How satisfied were you with the level of English of the guest speakers?
How did you perceive the communication about the seminars, was it adequate?
If you answered no on previous question, what would you like to see improved?
Please elaborate.
Did you learn something new because of the seminars?
What was the most interesting Seminar you attended this year?
Why did you attend the seminars? (more than one answer possible)
Do you have any additional remarks?

COMPILED DATA
BASIC CRITERIA QUESTIONS
Through our survey weve collected data of 34 different people who are all student of the
IBM program. Our research was filled in by 35.3% (12) females and 64.7% (22) males of
which 70.6% (24) arent International students and 29.4% (10) are. If we look at the age
category we see that of the 34 people who filled in the survey, 35.3% (12) of them are 21
and over, 41.2% (14) is between 20 and 21y old and 23.5% (8) is 18-19y old.

MORE IN-DEPTH QUESTIONS

The more in-depth questions show us what people precisely thought about the seminars,
we concluded that out of the 34 people who filled in our survey:
-

100% has already attended a seminar

Number of attended seminars:
14.7% (5) have attended one to two seminars
38.2% (13) have attended three to four seminars
44.1% (15) have attended four to five seminars
2.9% (1) have attended more than six seminars
Attended seminars not organized by Artevelde:
29.4% (10) havent attended a seminar not organized by Artevelde
70.6% (24) have attended a seminar not organized by Artevelde
Number of attended seminars not organized by Artevelde:
26.5% (9) None
50% (17) One to two
17.6% (6) Three to four
5.9% (2) Four or more
Is the person in question Satisfied with the seminars organized by
Artevelde
88.2% (30) Yes
11.8% (4) No

[Pick the date]

Further elaboration by people who were not satisfied:

More interesting topics, the ones we get are totally different from BEM ION. They have
really good seminars.
Pick a date and keep it. (x2)
I have not learned new things. Almost same what I have learned at first year of IBM.

How satisfied were you with the level of English of the guest speakers?
(Ranking went from 1 to 5/ Disappointed to satisfied)
0% was disappointed
11.8% (4) Gave a score of two
35.3% (12) Gave a score of three
32.4% (11) Gave a score of four
20.6% (11) Gave a score of five
How did you perceive the communication about the seminars? Was it
adequate?
79.4% (27) Said yes
20.6% (7) Said no

Further elaboration by people who said it was not adequate:

Changing of date and hours all the time.
Clearer communication
Sometimes it was quite late, very late, the day itself GODDAMMIT!
Timing
One person/ place to see everything would be nice instead of 3 different platforms
Chamilo is just not clear enough
They get cancelled every time
-

Did you learn something new because of the seminars?

79.4% (27) Said yes
20.6% (7) Said no

[Pick the date]

What was the most interesting Seminar according to the students?

This was an open question that gave us a lot of different answers with no clear winners
or losers, the opinions of these 34 people were so spread that most seminars were only
chosen once as a favorite, the seminars who were chosen twice are:
-

Ace it Steve Miller

Working and living abroad

Why did the person in question attend a seminar? (multiple open choice
question)
55.9% (19) Because it was compulsory
67.6% (23) Because I wanted to learn something new
11.8% (4) I was bored
8.8% (3) I feel ecstatic about Seminars

Additional remarks?
Gauge the reactions of the students this year to know what kind of seminars that
should book for the following year
More genuine foreign people instead of clumsy Belgians
Artevelde should try to be more organized in order not to postpone seminars all the
time.
Make more than 3 compulsory, and remove the assignment.
Invite Carl Van De Velde.

CONCLUSION
We can conclude that most of students have already finished the compulsory task of
going to seminars organized by Artevelde as well as seminars not organized by
Artevelde. Most of the 34 students were very satisfied with the content of the seminars
as well as the English skills of the guest speakers. The reason why some students
werent satisfied was mostly due to the content of the seminars as well as the timing and
issues surrounding timing. the 34 students didnt agree on what seminar was the most
interesting but the most surprising factor of the survey was that the students mainly
came to the seminars to learn something new and not because it was compulsory.
