Using SMART Notebook January 14, 2016

SMART Notebook on Desktop

Basics:
Adding a New Slide:
At the top of the screen, Insert->Blank Page
Or, tap the white rectangle with the green plus sign
Cloning a Page: You might want to clone a page if you are practicing the
same skill with new numbers in math, or reviewing a grammar skill in
reading
Click on the down arrow on the slide image in the slide sorter (on
the side of your screen)
Click Clone Page
Or, use CTRL+D (this never seems to work for me when cloning a
whole page)
You can also clone elements on a slide (text, pictures,
etc.). Click on whatever you want cloned, then press CTRL+D
(or use the down arrow)
Adding a Page to the Gallery: If you make a page that you will want to use
again in a different presentation, add it to the gallery
Click on the down arrow on the slide image
Click Add Page to Gallery
To insert the page later, open the gallery->look under My
Content. Slides are organized alphabetically by name and are named
by date created
Viewing the Presentation:
At the top of the page, click the Full Screen button (looks like a
blue computer screen with white corners)
Adding Images:
The Gallery (looks like a picture frame) has many images (type in
what youre looking for and search)
You can also copy and paste from the internet. I usually change
the image transparency so the background of the image doesnt take
up too much space (click on the image, click the down arrow->Set
Picture Transparency, then use the ink dropper to make parts of the
image transparent)

Locking/Unlocking
If you dont want something to move around freely, put it where
you want it to stay, click the down arrow->Locking->Lock in Place (or
use CTRL+K)
If something is locked and you want to move it, click on the lock>Unlock (or use CTRL+J)

Changing Slide Design:

Backgrounds:
Go into the Properties section
Change color or add a background effect (pattern fill, image fill,
gradient fill)
Adding Animations
I use Animation Library for animations. Search for an animation
you want to use, save it to your computer. In SMART Notebook, Insert>Picture File

Hiding Things: I like to hide answers or directions from students until they
are needed. There are a few ways to do this.
Use a screen shade: At the top of the page, click on the image
that looks like a screen. You can move the screen around to hide
information
Use images or shapes (I like this better, but it takes longer):
Insert a shape (also on the top, image looks like a circle and square).
Once you have drawn your shape, click on the arrow icon at the top of
the page, otherwise youll continue drawing shapes everywhere. To
make the shape hide and reveal: click on the shape, Down arrow>Properties, change the fill color first, then the line style if you want.
Under Object Animation, click Type->Fade Out. This makes the shape
disappear when it is tapped.
You can also make an image disappear by clicking on it>Down Arrow->Properties->Object Animation->Fade Out (or
another option)
If things arent hiding, it might be because they are layered
wrong. The last thing you add to a slide automatically goes on the top,
to change this, use the Down Arrow->Order, then move whatever
youve selected up or down

Using the Gallery: The Gallery has lots of useful tools (most of
which Ive never used. To use the Gallery, click on the picture
frame icon then search for whatever you want, most of these are
under Interactive and Multimedia and once clicked, will be
added to whatever page is open on the screen.)
Multiple Choice: Allows you to make a multiple choice
quiz
Keyword Match: Creates a vocabulary matching activity
(Ive also used it to match math facts)
Vortex Sort: Creates a sorting activity with two
categories
Category Sort: Creates a sorting activity with two or
three categories
Timer: There are two times in the gallery. The circle
timer can be made larger, so I use it more often.
Random: Typing random brings up several tools I use
in math. There are 6 and 10 sided dice that can be used for
computation. I also use the Random Number Generator to
create math problems, and to pick students (I set the
boundaries based on their classroom numbers). The Random
Word Chooser can also be used to pick students, but then
you have to enter in all of their names (I dont have time for
that).
Dice Keyword: I used this last year as a vocabulary
activity. I used two dice, one had the vocabulary words on it,
the other had tasks (definition, sentence, picture, part of
speech, antonym, synonym).
There are lots of other things in the Gallery that Ive
never tried
