PELTON WATER

WHEEL
By Anjolie

What is a Pelton water

wheel and who invented it?
Inventor
O Lester Allan

Pelton invented
the Pelton
water wheel, at
that time the
most efficient
design of the
water turbine.

Meaning
O Water wheel is a

large wheel driven

by flowing water,
used to work
machinery or to
raise water to a
higher level.

About Lester
Allan Pelton

Born :September 5,
1829, Vermillion,
Ohio, USA

Died: 14 March
1908, Oakland,
California , USA

Who funded him?

O The first wheel that he put to

practical use was to power the

sewing machine of his landlady,
Mrs. W. G. Groves in Campton
Ville. She gave him money and
materials to build it .

The
History of water
wheels

O Historians are not

sure when water

wheels were first
invented, but it is
known that they
were in use in
ancient Greece
several centuries
BC.

THE
SCIENTIFIC
PRICIPLES

How does it work?

Water wheels consist of

large wooden or metal
wheels which have paddles
or buckets arranged
around the outside rim.
The force or the weight of
the water on the paddles
or buckets turns the wheel.

ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Positive and negative effects

on the environment
O Historically there have also

been negative
consequences. The rotating
blades of water turbines
sometimes can kill fish and
also interrupt the natural
migrations and disrupting
peoples livelihoods. For
example, American Indian
tribes in the Pacific
Northwest had livelihoods
built around salmon fishing,
but aggressive dam building
destroyed their way of life.

O Water wheels are used

to convert the energy of

flowing or falling water
into mechanical power
or electricity. They can
be used to move water
and also to generate
energy such as
electricity. It also does
not pollute the
environment and is a
renewable source of
energy.

What is the impact on

society?
OWater wheels were used for crop

irrigation, grinding grains, supply

drinking water to villages and later
to drive sawmills, pumps, tilthammers, trip hammers, and to
power textile mills. They were the
first method of creating mechanical
energy that replaced humans and
animals.
