Research Title:
IMPROVISED AIR-COOLING SYSTEM USING BAMBOO (Bambusa vulgaris) STEM AND WATER
A. Question or Problem Being Addressed
The study aims to utilize bamboo stem and water as an improvised air-cooling system.
Specifically, the study will answer the following questions:
1. What is the average temperature inside the house with air-cooling system and without air-
cooling system?
2. What is the level of acceptability of the product in terms of:
a. Temperature inside the house (˚C)
b. Cost of materials used
3. Is there a significant difference between the temperature inside the house with and without
an improvised air-cooling system?
B. Goals/Expected Outcomes/Hypotheses
1. Goals
This study aims to provide an improvised air-cooling system using bamboo stem and water.
This will measure the level of acceptability of the product in terms of temperature inside the house
and the cost of constructing the prototype. This will also compare the temperature inside the house
with and without air-cooling system.
2. Expected Outcomes
This study primarily aims to determine the feasibility of bamboo stem and water as air-
cooling system. Moreover, this study intends to provide a cost-effective air-cooling system using
bamboo stem and water. The outcome of this research will be beneficial among household
consumers especially during dry season. This will also help to lessen the energy consumption by
replacing electric fans and air conditioning units with the air- cooling system made from bamboo
stem and water.
3. Hypotheses
This study aims to propose a supposed explanation as a starting point to further
investigation.
Ho: The use of bamboo stem and water has no significant effect as an improvised air-cooling
system.
Ha: The use of bamboo stem and water has a significant effect as an improvised air-cooling system.
Ho: There is no significant difference between the temperature inside the house with and without
air-cooling system.
Ha: There is a significant difference between the temperature inside the house with and without air-
cooling system.
C. Description in Details of Methods or Procedure
1. Source of Materials
The researcher will use the materials such as bamboo stem and water as the main
component of air-cooling system. The researcher will use 400 ml of water as the substance to cool
the air. The 2 digital thermometers to measure the temperature inside the house will be bought from
online shop. The two houses that will serve as the models of the study will be constructed by the
researcher.
2. Locale of the Study
This study will be conducted at Jacobo Z. Gonzales Memorial National High School. The
concept map, research proposal and other parts of the research paper will be done from January
14- March 2019. Gathering of materials to be used in constructing the prototype and house model
will be done from April- May 2019. The construction of the house model and prototype will be done
starting June 2019 until August 2019 at Grade 7 Science Laboratory and data gathering will be
done from September 10- September 16, 2019 at the school’s garden.
3. Procedures of the Study
A. Constructing the Prototype
The researcher will construct two houses for the study. Plywood will be used as walls of the
house having dimensions of 25 x 30 x 25 inches. The roof type is a typical metal roofing
used in houses with a dimensions of 26 x 10 x 27 inches. The doors with 8 x 10 inches and
windows with 25 sq. cm that will be installed on both models to enable air flow.
B. Installing the Air-cooling system
The two houses will be labeled as AC 1 and AC2. The prototypes will be installed with air-
cooling system made from PVC elbow, exhaust fan, bamboo and water and labeled as AC 1
and the prototype without air cooling system will be AC 2. To install the air-cooling system in
AC1, the researchers will attach the exhaust fan to the both ends of the PVC elbow, this is
to absorb and direct the airflow downward. Water canal will be constructed below the
bamboo to direct cool air to go inside the house. The water canal will be covered with net
so that the insects will not enter in the house.
C. Installing the Thermometer
The digital thermometer will be attached to the wall of the two houses to measure the
temperature inside the house.
4. Experimental Design and Treatment
The researcher will observe the difference between the temperature inside the two (2) house
models with and without air-cooling system. They will provide two (2) set ups to compare the
temperature inside the house.
AC2 will be the controlled group where it has no air-cooling system and will serve as the
basis for comparing the difference between the temperature of the two (2) houses. On the other
hand, the researcher will utilize bamboo and water as an air-cooling system for the second set up,
AC1, which will be the experimental group.
The researcher will observe the two (2) set ups for seven (7) days. The temperature inside
the house will be measured using digital thermometer for comparing the temperature of the two (2)
houses. The researcher will record the temperature five (5) times a day at the time of 6am, 9am,
12pm, 3pm, 6pm for seven (7) days. The observation will be done every day by measuring the
temperature inside the house with and without air- cooling system. The differences between the
temperature of AC1 and AC2 will be observed and recorded.
5. Data Analysis
The experiment will focus on providing alternative air ventilation using PVC elbow, exhaust
fan, bamboo and water as the main materials. The improvised air-cooling system will be tested on
two miniature houses and the temperature inside the house will be recorded. Observations will
focus on the following parameters:
1. level of acceptability of the air-cooling system in terms of the temperature of the miniature
house
2. differences between the temperature inside the miniature houses with and without air
ventilation.
Camera and record book will be used by the researcher to record the data gathered.
