    intelligence:whenJackpunchesPiggyinthefaceandbreakshis

    glasses,whenJackstealshisspecs,andwhenRogerkillsPiggy
    andhisbrainsspillout.
    SincethemomentPiggyandJackmet,itisobvioustothe
    readerthattheydonothavethesamepriorities.Jackenjoysthe
    islandandallhewantstodoishuntformeat,whilePiggy
    believesthatfire,whichsymbolizesrescue,ismostimportant.
    ThisdifferenceisaddressedwhenJackletsthefireburnoutto
    gohunting,andPiggyisfuriouswithhimforlosinghisone
    chanceatrescue.Intheagonyoftheloss,Piggycriedout
    shrilly:"Youdidn'toughttohaveletthatfireout.Yousaid

    Piggy,hecannolongerseeclearly.Heusedtobetheboythat
    guidedtheothersandkeptthemfromfallingintotheabyssof
    insanity.WhenJackgetsthespectacles,hedoesgetalittlebitof
    theintellectthattheyrepresent,buthedoesnotuseitforgood.

    WhentherealizationofhowhorribleJackishitsPiggy,heis
    infuriated.HedecidestheygotoJackandhistribeandtalks

    Merridewantellhim,IamGivememyglasses,Imgoingto
    sayyougotto!(158).Itisnotrealizedthatthisisabadidea
    becausetheydonothavethesymbolicspecs.
    ThemomentintelligenceisfullydiminishediswhenPiggy
    iskilled.Rogerdislodgesarockfromahigherareaonthe
    mountain:TherockstruckPiggyaglancingblowfromchinto
    kneetheconchexplodedintoathousandwhitefragmentsand
    ceasedtoexistPiggyfellfortyfeetandlandedonhisback
    acrossthatsquareredrockinthesea.Hisheadopenedandstuff
    cameoutandturnedred.(167).WhenPiggydies,itrepresents
    thatintelligenceisfullygone.AfterPiggyandhisglassesare

    bothdiminished,thebookentersanextremelychaoticphase
    becauseofthelackofintelligenceandreasoning.
    Throughanumberofsymbolicevents,Piggyandhis
    glasses,whichrepresentintelligence,aredevolved.Piggyguides
    theotherboysontheislandandhelpthemrefrainfromgoing
    insane.Asheleaves,theboysgocrazy.Slowly,butsurely,
    Piggyandhisspectaclesarewitheredaway.Intellectisslowly
    diminishedthroughmanykeyeventsinthisnovel.
