Class: Earth Science

Unit: Earths Place in the Universe

Teacher: Beverly Rodriguez
Lesson Topic: The effect of the moon on tides
Grade: 6
Standards: MS-ESS1-1 Develop and use a model of the Earth-sunmoon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses
of the sun and moon, and seasons.

Objective /
Purpose

With the knowledge the students already have on the

moon, ask students what they think controls the tides.
Show study jams video on Tides and have the students
write down two facts from the clip.
Have the students share what they learned
Students will be able to understand how ocean tides are
caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon on
the Earth as it rotates.

Instruction
al Input

Define the vocabulary words: tide, high tide, low tide,

spring tide, and neap tide
Explain how gravitational pull from both the sun and moon
affect ocean tides on Earth
Explain how the moon pulls water and Earth creating
bulges of water on both sides of the Earth.

Modeling

Show image of the earth and water being pulled by the

gravitational pull of the moon.

Checking
for
Understand
ing

Give every student a rubber band and have them stretch

the rubber band in a way that functions just like the
gravitational pull of the moon on the Earth
Play the sit down- stand up game

Ask yes or no questions that refer back to the slides

Stand up if
There are two neap tides per day
There are 8 hrs between tides
The sun has a greater gravitational pull
Spring tide is the highest of the high tides
(end of class)
Comment: In the beginning of the period the students had a quiz so
the lesson has no independent practice because of time constraints.
