Worksheet 3.

2
Impulse and momentum
Solve some problems involving momentum and the impulse
of a force.
1 Calculate the momentum of each of the following:
a an athlete of mass 60kg running at 8.0m/s
b a car of mass 600kg moving at 30m/s
c a bird of mass 50g flying at 12m/s.
2 Who has more momentum, a boy of mass 50kg running at 7.0m/s or a
girl of mass 45kg running at 8.0m/s?
3 A force of 100N acts for 6s. Calculate the impulse of the force.
4 A spacecraft is accelerating. Its rockets are fired for 40s. They provide a
force of 0.50N. Calculate the change in momentum of the spacecraft.
5 A driver uses the brakes to slow his car from 24m/s to 14m/s. The car
has a mass of 800kg.
a Calculate the change in the cars momentum.
b The cars brakes act for 20s. Calculate the force they must provide.
c In what direction must the force act?
