Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Sara

Teasdale learned all she knew from the
changing, industrialized world. With strict
Puritan parents and a frail health, she was
homeschooled until the age of nine where she
grew her curiosity for the arts and experimented
with her early works. Marrying Ernst Filsinger in
1914 and eventually moving to New York City in
1916 changed her classical outlook on life.
Teasdales unique use of passionate and
romantic subject matter made her pieces stand
out, especially in 1918, where she won the
Columbia University Poetry Society Prize, which
is known today as the Pulitzer Prize. In Beyond
all Beauty, readers can find a collection of
Teasdales poems that represent her changing
outlook on life in relation to her life experiences.
