Histologically, the mass is composed of haphazard, loosely arranged spindloid to stellate cells surrounded by a 1 mm thick collagenous capsule. Scattered, small clusters of macrophages distended with homogenous yellow or granular brown material (hematoidin and hemosiderin, respectively) infiltrate the periphery of the mass. ‘Thyroid gland: Grossly, a small, encapsulated pale tan nodule adjacent to the trachea exudes abundant thick pale tan liquid on cut section. Histologically, the thyroid gland is focally disrupted by an expansile cyst lined by a keratinized stratified squamous epithelium and supported by mature collagen. Clusters of lymphocytes and plasma cells dissect between collagen fibers adjacent to the cyst. Small intestine: The lamina propria is mildly expanded by lymphocytes and plasma cells that multifocally lift and separate intestinal crypts. \diserete vacuoles Liver: Diffusely throughout all sections of liver, hepatocytes contain multiple, small, (hydropic degeneration). Spleen: The splenic red pulp is expanded by sheets of erythrocytes (congestion). Tissues examined and considered normal include the trachea, lungs, heart, liver, gallbladder, bile duct, kidneys, spleen, lymph node, stomach, large intestines, pancreas, and bone marrow HISTOLOGIC DIAGNOSES: 1. Nodular fibroplasia, focal, mild; diaphragm. 2. Ultimobranchial duct cyst; thyroid gland Page 1 of 2 This report contains information that is confidential and is intended for the use ofthe individual or entity named on page I. Enteritis, lymphoplasmacytic, chronic, segmental, mild COMMENTS: There are no significant histologic abnormalities noted in this bear. The focus of nodular fibroplasia within the diaphragm may reflect an old focal injury‘inflammatory process or possibly an early neoplastic lesion. The inciting cause is not determined, and it is considered an incidental finding in this case. Ultimobranchial duct cysts are derived from pharyngeal pouches that fuse incorrectly during embryonic development. There is some mild, chronic inflammation associated with the cyst. The enteritis, is mild, and likely had no clinical significance. The changes in the liver are considered normal in a hibemating animal. Splenic congestion is attributed to terminal sedation and euthanasia. WORK PENDING: None Dr. Laura B. Williams/JDRijar/jdb Phone contact: An email summarizing these results sent to Dr. Clyde on 2/4/16, Page 2 of 2 This report contains information that is confidential and is intended forthe use of the individual or entity named on page I.
