Diagnostic Assessment: Sound

Annotation
This diagnostic assessment was
designed for a Year Two class in 2016
to discover what students already knew
about sound.
The purpose of the assessment was to
allow me to develop a unit of work in
the Key Learning Area of Science and
Technology which was appropriate to
the students prior knowledge and skills.
This was an extremely effective form of
assessment, however, I recognised that
not all students in my class respond
well to written tasks. In order to give all
students an opportunity to share what
they knew and wanted to know about
the topic, we gathered as class after the
worksheet was completed to brainstorm
and discuss our ideas.

Students who communicate their

thoughts better verbally were given the
opportunity to share their ideas. Then I
compared their participation in the
discussion to their written task, I could
still clearly see their prior learning and
interests.
