INDIVIDUAL QUESTIONS
a) What are the factors that need to be considered when developing
materials for the use of language in context?
R: The main factor must be that the material is pleasant for the person to
whom it is directed, so that it awakens their interest to continue “One more factor
for reading materials developers to consider is that they should decide upon the
topics with which the reader feels familiar and comfortable”. (J. MUKUNDAN, 2016,
pag 67)

Another important factor when developing material is the prior knowledge of

our students. We cannot ignore it because it allows us to make the material
pleasant for them and at the same time so that they can understand it easily “Once
activated, the background knowledge will serve as a reference for the interpretation
of the reading content”. (J. MUKUNDAN, 2016, pag 67)

b) What are the different types of listening activities that can be used
in English language teaching? Give at least 3 types, and explain.

R:

• Intensive listening

• Selective listening

• Interactive listening

• Extensive listening

• Responsive listening

• Autonomous listening

INTENSIVE LISTENING: focuses on such elements as phonology, syntax,

and lexis. Rost goes on to define intensive listening as “listening to a text closely,
with the intention to decode the input for purposes of analysis”

Different activities are suggested for intensive listening, such as Dictation,

provoked repetition, error detection and simultaneous interpretation.
INTERACTIVE LISTENING: The most important thing is the communication
between a sender and a receiver, this interaction being the vital point of interactive
listening. There is constant feedback between the communicating parties.

EXTENSIVE LISTENING: This type of listening focuses on long periods of

time in which the student must understand the material. This type of listening has
become particularly famous today thanks to streaming platforms such as Netflix,
which allow you to watch movies in their original language, which are part of the
material to put into practice the type of extensive listening.

(P. MAFTOON, 2016, pag 76-78)

c) How can teachers ensure that their speaking activities are engaging
and motivating for learners of different ages and abilities?

R: Background knowledge is very important to motivate the student in oral

activities. The teacher must commit to using topics that are familiar to all his
students so that they are interested in expressing what they feel about said topics.
(J. MUKUNDAN, 2016, pag 67)

However, the complexity of the activities and therefore the topic must be
adjusted according to the age of the student.

d) How can teachers develop writing materials that are sensitive to the
cultural backgrounds of their learners?

R: The teacher must know his students to come up with study material that
is friendly to them. It is important that if material is going to be used in the native
language, an exhaustive review of it is carried out to analyze whether it can be
understood in the cultural context of the learners and to evaluate the difficulty it
could contain when addressing native speakers. (J. MUKUNDAN, 2016, pag 99-
100)

e) How can teachers evaluate the effectiveness of their reading

materials?
R: To measure effectiveness, teachers should use tests that focus on
grammatical and vocal elements tested in the material. Additionally, you must know
the students' perception of the material, collecting their opinions regarding the
topics used and the quality of the material. (J. MUKUNDAN, 2016, pag 99)
