Problem 1:
Table 1 given in page 2 shows the calculated cut and fill areas at different stations along a
proposed route. The distance between the stations is 100 m. The shrinkage factor for the soil
at the site was determined to be 15%. The agreed Free Haul Distance (FHD) is 200m and the
Limit of Profitable Haul (LPH) was determined to be 500 meter. Based on the given
information, answer the following questions:
a) Complete the calculations (gray coloured cells in Table 1 given in page 2) required to
develop the mass-haul diagram.
b) Plot the mass-haul diagram.
c) On the plotted mass-haul diagram, show the free-haul distance between Station 0 and
a point at 750m from Station 0. Also determine the volume of material between the
above two points that can be hauled free of cost.
d) On the plotted mass-haul diagram, show the profitable haul distance between Station
0 and a point at 750m from Station 0. Also determine the quantity of material that can
be profitably hauled between the above two points.
e) Determine the amount of materials that needs to be wasted and borrowed between
Station 0 and a point at 750m from Station 0.
